Unit 57: Photography and
Photographic Practice
Task 3 Selection of final images &
review
2. Aim of Shoot
•
Originally I went out with the intention of
taking photos of the architectural buildings
that I could use to put into a magazine. As
we got the base of the group photos sorted
and positions that we were set we then
started to apply the knowledge of
photography techniques and applying them
to the shoot.
•
On the right hand side is one of the photos
of Salford Quays this is a wide angles shot
so I could get a lot of the landscape in
frame and be able to show off Salford
Quays and the many building that it holds. I
did not use any techniques for this photo as
I wanted it to be highly detailed.
3. Description of shoot
•
•
The photography group went on a trip to Salford
quays to take pictures of the landscape and
hopefully get some good shots that we could use
in our music magazine. So we walked around
the site for a couple of hours and began to take
pictures.
I used a the landscape in the background to
show Salford quays but also the I put the water
into the foreground to get a depth to the
photograph and allow the audiences eye to be
drawn to the different places and across the
water.
•
•
The position I was able to get to for the shot was
very good it allowed me to get height to avoid all
the walkway as it was not interesting to look at and
made the river bigger and look like larger place
than where I was situated. The route that the group
walked around allowed for visual and appealing
places to be shot and made my photographs better.
At first I was following the techniques trying to get
as much out of the photographs as possible. As the
day went on I started to shoot more photographs
that I thought were more visually appealing.
4. Editing effects
•
I took a plain photography of Salford Quays
on a cloudy day so the image was very
grainy and did not look professional. I began
by adding a curve effect to darken the
image. I then wanted to give a warm
morning glow to the photograph. I achieved
this by adding a orange photo filter. The
image looked edited because there was
nothing to create this orange glow. I added
a movie prime lens flare to create a fake
sun to match the orange glow. Finally to
darken the image and create the morning
atmosphere for the Location I added
another curve effect and overlayed it over
the top of the photo.

5. Final Images
The first image is of the Salford swing bridge created in 2000
designed by Carlos Fernandez Casado. I chose this location
because it is a iconic to people in Salford. The strengths that I like
in this photograph is that I used framing to capture the bronze
building in the background that glowed and fit quite nicely into the
Photo. Another strength is leading lines is used in the photograph
as your eyes follow the bridge from the bottom until you connect
with the building. I believe that I over edited the photograph
With the lighting effect making it too dark around the edges. I kept
this effect on because the glow of the building is essential to
making the photograph interesting.
I chose the second photograph not because of the techniques that
were applied, but how the image showed a lot of Salford Quays in
one photo. I climbed up higher to get a level shot with the buildings
In the distance so that they were not obstructed by the rail line. My
Strength in this photo is the editing as I made a plain picture an
gave it a morning atmosphere. I don’t feel like the photo is over
edited and looks to a professional standard. The weakness with
the photograph is that it shows a lot of water which is uninteresting
to the person viewing. I could have zoomed in to get a more
detailed
photo of the buildings.
7. Rejected Images
First Photo
This photograph was rejected from being used as a
final image because the photo is quite blurry
making distinct features unnoticeable. Also the
photograph was intended to parallel but is abit
off center so the photograph is not up to
professional standards.
•
Second Photo
The second photo could have been used for m final
product but was rejected because of the high
exposure to light. I put the photograph into
Photoshop and tried to edit it so the exposure
was lessened but none of the available tools
allowed me to change the exposure to a point
that satisfied me.
•
Third Photo
The final photo was rejected simply because of the
blandness of the building as I thought this would
no be appealing to the target audience. I was
not able to edit this photograph as the colour
are all the same and contrast together very
badly.

8. Aims for next project
• I have learnt from is assignment the techniques in
the way a photographers sets up and take a photoshoot. This will next time allow me to take my
shoot more slowly and plan out what technical
features I want to apply to make my photo-shoot as
professional as possible. For my next photo-shoot I
will make sure that the photographs taken aim for a
purpose and link together to create the main
product.
