1. The Life of GraceChapters 1-4 Friday, October 8, 2010 Confirmation Preparation St. Joseph the Worker
2. Chapter 1 Knowing God Through Revelation There can be no doubt that God exists “Everywhere in the universe we find order and design.” (p. 13) Nothing in creation was accidental; there is a Creator Humans were made “in the image of God” We are part of God’s physical creation. Our ability to choose (free will) indicates that we have spiritual and rational souls, which distinguishes us from animals.
3. Revelation is what God has told us about himself and his purpose for us. Our faith allows us to believe what God reveals to us. Reason helps us to understand why we believe what we believe even if we don’t completely understand all that God reveals. We cannot discover all there is to learn about God through reason alone…
4. In reading the Bible, we learn many things about God God knows everyone and everything. God knows all that ever was, all that is and all that ever will be.
5. The TRINITY is one of the great mysteries of our faith It is Jesus who reveals the greatest truth about God, in that there are three persons in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit
6. Chapter 2 Divine Revelation The first people to know God were Adam and Eve. God makes a covenant with Abraham, who becomes the father of the Chosen People, Israel.
7. Jesus is God’s greatest revelation Jesus taught people about who God really is He passed on his teachings to others who later founded the Church After the Resurrection, the Apostles preached and taught the gospel to others
8. The Holy Bible or Sacred Scriptures, is the INSPIRED word of God God is the primary author Human authors were chosen to write in their own language and style God moved these people to write about him and guided their minds as to what to put down

11. Chapter 3 Creation The universe and everything in it, came to exist because God wanted it to exist. Originally part of oral tradition, it was passed down to teach and remind people: There is only one God and He is he the Creator of all that exists. God created the world in an orderly way and as a way of sharing his love with us. Everything created by God is good.
12. God gave Adam and Eve special gifts… Complete harmony in their lives Never argued or acted selfishly Kept free of suffering, sickness and death Regarded as “heirs to Heaven” *All that was required of them was that they love and serve God all their lives.
13. God told Adam and Eve that they could eat anything in the Garden except for the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge…
14. The Devil saw a chance to lead Adam and Eve away from God by tempting them to eat the forbidden fruit He told them that if they ate, they would be just like their Creator As a result, Adam and Eve were introduced to a life of suffering and were banished from Eden In spite of the fall of Adam and Eve, God promised us a Redeemer, someone who would come and reconcile us to God and restore us to a life of grace.
15. The Creation of the Angels Not often spoken about when discussing the Creation stories It is believed that the angels were created within the first six days of creation, possibly when God created the heavens
16. Who or what are angels? Pure spirits No physical body Possess greater power and intelligence than human beings Unlike humans, they were not given free will; they were created for the purpose of serving God
17. The Battle of Heaven After some time had passed, God decided to test some of his angels to see if they would willingly follow his commands and freely love him. Some, led by Lucifer, refused to serve God and rebelled. God created Hell for those fallen angels or demons who no longer wanted to be with him. To this very day, they work to turn God’s creation against him.
18. The faithful or good angels were led by Michael, the Archangel These angels assist us in living Christian lifestyle in service of God God has assigned each of us a guardian angel whose mission is to help us reach heaven
19. Chapter 4 God’s Plan of Salvation God makes a COVENANT with Abraham.
21. The youngest of Jacob’s sons was Joseph, whom he loved dearly. His other sons became jealous. The brothers sold Joseph for 20 pieces of silver to slave traders but told their father he had been killed by a wild animal. Once in Egypt, Joseph’s talents allow him to be brought into a royal household and eventually, he becomes a servant to the Pharaoh. In the land of Joseph’s family, the people suffered from famine. When the brothers travelled to Egypt to find food, they are re-united with Joseph and all is forgiven. Joseph prefigures Jesus… The family, along with thousands of Israelites, moved to Egypt, where, as long as Joseph was alive, they were treated well.
22. After the death of Joseph, a new Pharaoh forced the Israelites into a life of slavery. The people began to think that God had abandoned them but God would send a special man to set his people free…
