Thriller Opening Analysis
1.
2. • For inspiration we looked at the opening to the film 'We need to
talk about Kevin.' I found the imagery of the tomato festival very
interesting because of the way the tomato juice splattered across
people emulating the look of blood. It also evokes some Diairetic
tension, due to the lack of context viewers want to watch on to see
what happens next. A very similar thing is done in the opening of
the TV series 'Dexter.‘
•
In Dexter you see, a CSI investigator, going through his morning
routine and they use seemingly innocent objects and turns them
into victims of Dexter. Using a knife, and eerie non-diegectic music
it makes the opening very tense even though nothing particularly
creepy is going on.
Dexter opens with a mosquito sucking out his blood, which Dexter
crushes. This could be symbolic of the ease at which Dexter can get
rid of things that are irksome to him revealing his evil nature.

4. • Even the title itself is dripping with blood this is very blatantly
referring to Dexter's murderous nature. The diegetic sound of
Dexter's razor grazing against his neck creates tension and makes
the viewer want to cringe and the fact he is unmoved when blood
drips down his neck suggests maybe he enjoys the feeling showing
his more cynical side. The imager in the kitchen is very atavistic and
brutal, it shows the carnage of different kinds of meat that he is
ripping apart with his teeth and the way he plunges the knife into
the blood orange imitates the way he might cut apart flesh as the
juice splatters everywhere as he slices into the flesh of the orange,
even the way he puts on his shirt simulates imagery of suffocation.
As Dexter leaves his house we can't see him as normal we feel the
tension as he comes closer to the camera and we see him wearing a
smug smile perhaps displaying his confidence within himself and his
ability to murder.
