2014 has been a successful year of growth and renewed
programs and services for BACOA.
Our recent Christmas Luncheon at the Barrington Park District, featured a
delicious holiday meal, served by dedicated volunteers, musical
entertainment, and a visit from Santa, It reminded me of the childlike
innocence of the season. It was not only the young grandchild who was wide­
eyed as he dove into Santa's lap, but the many seniors who also wanted to
greet Santa, in between singing familiar carols and tunes from their own
childhood. The energy and excitement provided a great way to celebrate the
work of BACOA, made possible by so many incredibly generous volunteers,
individuals, families, businesses, and foundations.

2. This year has seen the continuation of so many well­received programs and
services, just like the Monday luncheons and game time. We have been able
to start new programs, like our day respite program in partnership with
Lutheran Church of Atonement, and even expand it because of the needs of
family caregivers We have secured participation of all the villages in our area
in the critical transportation program offered through PACE. Our team has
offered well­received educational programs to equip caregivers with
powerful tools, endless hours of social services to tackle daily issues for
seniors, assistance with income taxes, and especially health insurance and
Medicare enrollment. Support groups have flourished to guide folks through
the challenges of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. And we have been
treated to beautiful fashions and caregiver stories to help us remember the
challenges, and also the rewards of aging. And yet the need for programs
continues.
Because of the success of events like BrewFest and The BACOA Bash, and
the generousness of individuals, family trusts, foundations, local
organizations like the Barrington Area Community Foundation and United
Way, just to name a few, BACOA has been able to provide these vital
services.
Part of the joy of this holiday season is that like the child's eagerness at
seeing Santa, BACOA continues to be able to meet the needs of seniors,
caregivers, and the community because of the joyous embrace of generous
people who partner with us to continue our delivery of services. For this, we
are thankful.
And if you would like to continue this joyous embrace, please consider a

Great News for Year­End Charitable Contributions for Those Over Age
Seventy!
The IRA Charitable Rollover Provision has been renewed and applied
retroactively for 2014. This is a great benefit for certain qualified donors
who want to make a contribution to the Barrington Area Council on
Aging (BACOA) by December 31, 2014.
On December 16, 2014, the Senate passed the Tax Increase Prevention
Act of 2014 (HR 5771), which included an extension of the IRA

3. Charitable Rollover provision through December 31, 2014. The House
passed the Act earlier and President Obama signed it into law December
19th.
Here is how it works: Donors age 70 1/2 and older may transfer up to
$100,000 from their traditional or Roth IRAs directly to qualified public
charities without incurring any federal income taxes on the transfers.
Unlike typical IRA withdrawals, these transfers are excluded from the
donor's adjusted gross income. In other words, donors can make their
gifts go further and meet the tax code requirements for minimum annual
distributions from their IRAs. These benefits are available to taxpayers
even if they do not itemize their tax returns.
This provision provides an excellent way to give directly to BACOA. We
encourage you to contact your IRA administrators or an accountant
immediately if you are considering such a gift as it may take time to
complete this process by December 31, 2014. The Act does not provide a
grace period for transfers after December 31. Unfortunately, this
provision has yet not been extended into 2015.
