Being design minded
1. BEING
DESIGN-MINDED
“People form an opinion about a company or
product based on the signals that it conveys.
People DO judge a book by its cover. We may
have the best product, the highest quality, the
most useful software, etc; if we present them
in a slipshod manner, they will be perceived as
slipshod; if we present them in a creative,
professional manner, we will impute the
desired qualities.”
-Mike Markkula, original investor in Apple
and mentor to Steve Jobs
2. Why does Earth Anatomy need to
be a design-minded company?
Regardless of how important we feel
design is to our lives, it affects us in
countless ways on a daily basis. We are
surrounded
by
designed
objects,
advertisements, and experiences at all
times. From the user experience of an
ATM machine, to the simple layout of a
traffic light, to the chairs we sit in, design
reaches out to us, and whether or not we
notice simply depends on how hard we’re
looking.
If Earth Anatomy wants to market to
creative people like architects and
designers, they need to provide welldesigned promotional material that lets
creative people know that they are on
the same page, and are willing and able
to facilitate oncoming creative ventures.
To creative professionals, small details
matter, and something like a cleanly
presented, high quality promotional
booklet and sample collection could
be the deciding factor on whether that
material ends up proudly displayed on an
office desk, or in a trash can. Seem harsh?
Here’s why...
3. THE OFFICE
To an architect/designer, an office is more
than just a cubicle. It is a multi-functional
space to work, meet with clients, research,
relax, and often, live in. It is a projection
of who they are, what they’re passionate
about, and how they choose to live.
4. THE LIBRARY
At the root of creativity lies research. Whether it’s material research, perusing for
inspiration, or learning about new working methods, if it’s not online, it’s in some form
of publication. That is why at the heart of every creative office, there is a library.
5. BOOKS & MAGAZINES
This isn’t your typical library, however. This library has to look damn good! Publishers of
architecture, art, and design literature know this and utilize good graphic design to
ensure that their products look good both while being read, and on the shelf or coffee
table. Considering these dual purposes is something a design minded company has to
do. While these clean layouts are aesthetically attractive, they also instill confidence in
creative professionals, signifying to them that Earth Anatomy is empathetic towards
design, and is ready to facilitate future creative projects.
6. Publishers Phaidon and
Taschen produce many
books about architecture and
design that exemplify clean,
high quality design.
It comes as no surprise
that these are the books
that architects and
designers choose to
keep around the studio,
both for inspiration, and
for their good looks.
