Coaching for Change – Virtual Workshop

This syllabus provides an overview of the activities that make up this workshop. We encourage you to complete the
activities in the order provided. The course consists of watching short 2 -10 minute videos, completing experiments
(practice activities) and participating in discussions on The Alley. The final experiment is to apply what you have learned
during a coaching conversation. Contact ATSC for technical issues on the LRN. Contact your instructor if you are unable to
access The Alley. Note: You will receive access to The Alley Discussion Forum just before the workshop.

                                                            As you work with others this week, identify how often you
                                                            give advice, provide feedback or coach. How often do you

                                                    Experiment 2
                                                            To prepare for Week 3’s experiment, identify a person and
                                                            the behavior you wish to coach.
                                                            Access the Coaching Planner and complete the first two
                                                            questions

 and reply to at least one
                                                            What did you discover about how often you give advice,
 other person’s post
                                                            provide feedback, or coach?

Complete Online Activity    5 minutes       Watch an example of a non-directive coaching conversation and

Conduct 2 experiments       20 minutes      Experiment 3
                                                     Throughout the week listen for facts and interpretations
                                                     and think about what questions you could ask to identify
                                                     the facts behind the interpretation
                                                     If the opportunity presents itself practice asking clarifying
                                                     questions
                                            Experiment 4
                                                     Review the Coaching Planner you completed as part of
                                                     Week 1 to determine if the behavior you identified is a fact
                                                     or an interpretation
                                                     If necessary, rewrite the answer to the question “Where is
                                                     the coachee now?” using facts
                                                     Once you have identified a fact, set up a coaching
                                                     appointment with the coachee to be completed as week
                                                     3’s experiment

                                                     Was the behavior you identified for coaching a fact or

Conversation Key Points                     identify your key learnings from this workshop
Create a plan to improve    15 minutes      Based upon last week’s coaching session and the specific areas
your coaching skills                        of coaching you wish to improve upon, do the following:
                                                   Using the Coaching Planner, create a plan to improve
                                                   your coaching skills. To create the plan, remember to
                                                        - Identify the possibilities
                                                        - Determine the pros and cons of each possibility
                                                        - Pick the possibility with the most chances of
                                                            success
                                                        - Plan the specifics of the action you will take
                                                   Set up a time to review your plan and your key learnings
                                                   with your manager

                                    survey asking how you have applied the skills that you have learned

  • 1. Coaching for Change – Virtual Workshop Syllabus Jan Saillard jan.saillard@allstate.com 847-402-2650 This syllabus provides an overview of the activities that make up this workshop. We encourage you to complete the activities in the order provided. The course consists of watching short 2 -10 minute videos, completing experiments (practice activities) and participating in discussions on The Alley. The final experiment is to apply what you have learned during a coaching conversation. Contact ATSC for technical issues on the LRN. Contact your instructor if you are unable to access The Alley. Note: You will receive access to The Alley Discussion Forum just before the workshop. Week 1 Activity Approximate Notes Total Time Complete Introduction 5 minutes On The Alley, introduce self and what you want to gain from this on The Alley workshop. Look back at the posts to get to know other learners. Watch 6 Videos on the 25 minutes Videos LRN What is Coaching (2 min)) Difference Between Advice, Feedback, and Coaching (3 ) Steps to access videos Coaching During Change (4.5 min) Four Coaching Questions (3.5 min) Types of Coaching (8.5 min) Planning Coaching Conversation (complete before Experiment 2) (2.5 min) Complete Online Activity 5 minutes Watch an example of a directive coaching conversation and on the LRN identify the use of the coaching questions Conduct 2 Experiments 15 minutes Experiment 1 As you work with others this week, identify how often you give advice, provide feedback or coach. How often do you give advice instead of coach Experiment 2 To prepare for Week 3’s experiment, identify a person and the behavior you wish to coach. Access the Coaching Planner and complete the first two questions Participate in two 10 minutes Discussion discussions on The Alley Reply to the following 2 discussions on The Alley and reply to at least one What did you discover about how often you give advice, other person’s post provide feedback, or coach? What behavior have you identified to coach and how, if any, has change impacted this behavior? To create the plan, remember to - Identify the possibilities - Determine the pros and cons of each possibility - Pick the possibility with the most chances of success - Plan the specifics of the action you will take Set up a time to review your plan and your key learnings with your manager Discussion 10 minutes Discussion Participate in one new Reply to the following two discussion on The Alley discussion on The Alley and reply to at least one 1.
