4. Long term care facilities provide care to individuals who cannot care for themselves. Since long-term
care is a service industry, it is difficult to define universally accepted standards similar to those used
by the manufacturing industry. While most consumers can agree on performance standards for an
automobile, not everyone agrees on the criteria used to evaluate the quality of health care services.
In long-term care, this problem is compounded by the frailty and declining health status of many of
the clients served.
Nursing Home Statistical Yearbook is an annual compendium of statistics on the nursing home
industry, drawing on data from the Health Care Financing Administration (the governmental agency
that administers Medicare and Medicaid). Following brief introductory essays, the book consists of
extensive data tables providing detailed information on America's nursing homes and their residents.
The data are organized by state and, in some instances, smaller market areas. Because the data are
based on a newly revised and more extensive survey process, much of what is presented has never
before been available, including average nurse and therapist staffing hours per patient day, reported
nationally and by state.
Topics include: Resident Acuity • Resident ADL Characteristics • Other Resident Characteristics •
Survey Deficiencies • Scope and Severity Codes • Facility Characteristics • Staffing Information
