Color Lesson Plan:
To familiarize the students with the colors I will begin as a large group. I will
introduce the children to the four colors (Red, green, yellow, and blue) through flash
cards. 10-15 minutes
Once the children have become familiar/comfortable in recognizing the colors I will
then read the following books “Pete the cat: I love my white shoes” by Eric litwin
and “colors” by Sara Kabil … (letting them call out the colors or repeat back to me as
we read).. 10-15 minutes. While these books include other colors than what we will
be focusing on hopefully this will help them distinguish differences between them
and place other familiar objects with that color.
Next we will break out into smaller group work. I will have 5 different stations for
the children (Math, Science, Art, Dramatic play, Sensory).
With 15 students the students will be divided into 5 groups of 3… The students will
spend roughly 15 minutes at each station… My assistant and I will be sure to rotate
through each station working and playing with each group of children… Some time
will be spent for transitions as I will have the students clean up their area before
they rotate.
Most of these activities focus on the same objectives, only varying a little… a big one
to add at the end would be self esteem.. I want to offer as much directed time to each
child as possible and allow for free play to experiement with each activity, no real
right or wrong answer.
After these activities the last 15 minutes we would return to large group try to
dicuss some of their favorite activities and colors… and if need for time allow them
to choose one area to return too for some wrap up free play.
Dramatic Play:
Items needed: dress up items such as colored masks, ribbons … or colored play
foods they could pretend to cook with.
Task: Let the kids use their imaginations as to how they want to use the items to
play with and represent the colors
Objectives: imagination, social skills (sharing, play).
Sensory:
Items Needed: tub filled with water, floating and sinking elements of the four colors
(ex: blocks that sink, bottle caps that float), tools to catch and sort the
floating/sinking materials (ex: measuring cups, scoops).
Task: Each child could be assigned a certain color to collect ( could include other
colors that they shouldn’t scoop up black/white) Also let them use their hands (how
many can they pick up now versus the scoop, etc…
Objectives: hand-eye coordination, languauge devolpment, color recognition,
problem solving, awareness of floating/sinking, social skills (taking turns,
communication)
Art:
Items needed: kids washable paint in the four colors, same color match box cars
Task: Place blobs of paint on each side have kids drive to the matching color, retrace
their tracks.. another opportunity to see how the primary colors mix.
Objectives: fine motor, hand eye coordination and control, cause and effect, color
recoginition and matching, language development
Science:
Items Needed: Mirror, colored transparent chips and cups
Task: The mirror creates a light table so children can creatively see how colors mix
together… They can make patterns/designs/pictures etc…
Objective: creativity and imagination, cause and effect, spatial awareness
experimenting with shapes and space
Math:
Items needed: Red, yellow, blue, green pipe cleaners, same colored paper, empty
spice jars.
Task: match the right color pipe cleaner to the right spice jar… (possibly work with
them on counting how many of each color they have found)
Learning Objectives: fine motor, hand-eye coordination, concentration, language
development with use of color names, mathematics sorting and matching.
