Exam Question:
Discuss the ways in which the extract
constructs the representation of gender
using the following:
• Camera shots, angles, movement and
composition
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise en scene
Level 4
Explanation/analysis/argument (16-20 marks out of 20)
• Shows excellent understanding of the task
• Excellent knowledge and understanding of the way
technical aspects are used to construct the extract’s
representations
• Clearly relevant to set question
Use of examples (16-20marks out of 20)
• Offers frequent textual analysis from the extract – award
marks to reflect the range and appropriateness of
examples
• Offers a full range of examples from each technical area
• Offers examples which are clearly relevant to set question
Use of terminology (8-10 marks out of 10)
• Use of terminology is relevant and accurate
• Complex issues have been expressed clearly and fluently.
Sentences and paragraphs, consistently relevant, have
been well structured, using appropriate technical
terminology. There may be few, if any, errors of spelling,
punctuation and grammar.
Candidate A:
Throughout the extract of ‘Doctor Who’,
there is a fairly stereotypical
representation of gender. This is shown by
the various camera shots and mise-en-
scene connoting gender difference.
Candidate B
The extract starts with a close- up of a
man in a suit, with three people at the far
back and below him. He starts in focus,
while the other characters are out of focus,
suggesting that he is more powerful than
them.
Candidate C
In this extract the representation of gender
changes throughout the five minute clip.
The opening shot is of a male character,
he is dressed in a black suit and is
represented with a low angle shot so that
he is seen as powerful. It does this
because this particular camera angle
makes it look as if he is bigger than
everyone else. He is made to seem as if
he is in charge via the specific dialog.
Candidate C
In this extract the representation of gender
changes throughout the five minute clip.
The opening shot is of a male character,
he is dressed in a black suit and is
represented with a low angle shot so that
he is seen as powerful. It does this
