What is the
    Picture-Word Inductive Model?
• Designed to help young children become
literate through the use of images as stimuli.
• Students make connections between the
images and the words, learn how they’re
spelled, learn how to read the words, and
  learn how to write them.
• Natural connection to foreign-language
  learning.
Connection to National Standards:
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign
 Languages (ACTFL) Common Core Alignment
• Interpersonal Communication (Standard 1.1)
    – Engage in the oral exchange of ideas in formal and informal situations.
    – Self-monitor and adjust language production.
• Interpretive Communication (Standard 1.2)
    – Demonstrate comprehension of content from authentic audio and visual
      resources.
• Presentational Communication (Standard 1.3)
    – Produce expository writing.
    – Self-edit written work for content, organization, and grammar.
• Comparisons: Language (Standard 4.1)
    – Demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons
of the language studied and one’s own.
• Comparisons: Cultures (Standard 4.2)
    – Compare and reflect on products, practices, and/or perspectives of the target
      culture(s) and one’s own culture.

                http://www.actfl.org/files/Aligning_CCSS_Language_Standards_v6.pdf
Steps of the Model
1. Choose picture, and have students label what they see in
     the picture. (Teacher add labels.)
2. Read and review the picture.
3. Classify the words identified (by grammatical function,
     type of action, etc.).
4. Read and review again, saying the word, spelling it, and
     saying it again.
5. Add any new words needed, then name the picture.
6. Students generate a sentence (or sentences) related to
     picture.
7. Teacher helps put sentences together in a paragraph.
8. Read and review the sentences and paragraphs.
