BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY
• They begin the journey via L ubeck and Copenhagen.
They arrive in Reykjavik where the two procure the
services of Hans Bjelke(a Danish hunter) as their guide,
and travel overland to the base of the volcano. T hey
reach the volcano in late June only to find that it has
not one but three craters.

3. R ereading Saknussemm's message they understand that
the passage to the centre of the E arth is through the one
crater the shadow of a nearby mountain peak touches at
noon. Unfortunately, this is only true for the last days of
June and for the next days, with J rapidly approaching,

that will force his uncle to give up the project and return

4. PROFESSOR LIDENBROCK
H is an old scientist who works at the University of

H amburg, in Germany . H is sixty-five years old. H

wears small round glasses and that make him look very
serious. H has got white hair and wrinkles on his face.

H has got a strong personality and he is a hard- working
e
person. H is also a man of astonishing impatience, and
e
he wants to depart to Iceland immediately as soon as
he discovers the information about the lost world and he
takes his reluctant nephew Axel with him

5. AXEL
H is P
e rofessor's nephew. H is young and intelligent. H
e e
is only nineteen years old and he is the P rofessor's
personal assistant. H is tall and slim. H has got brown
e e
eyes and short wavy hair. H doesn't want to travel with
e
his uncle. H tries to reason with him, explaining his fears
e
of descending into a volcano and putting forward various
scientific theories as to why the journey is impossible, but
fails to make his uncle see his point of view

6. GRAUBEN
She is Axel`s girlfriend. She is seventeen years
old and she has got long blond hair and bright
blue eyes. She lives in Germany. She is in love
his Axel and she wants to marry Axel. W hen she
hears about the journey she is very happy and
she promises to wait for him. She knows that he
will be famous like his uncle when he come back

7. HANS
• H is tall and very strong. H has small

blue eyes and long red hair.
• H is the perfect guide for the job

because he almost never smiles or talks.

8. CHAPTER 1
• NAME: A STRANGE MESSAGE
• PLACE: GERMANY
• CHARACTERS:

9. Otto Lidenbrock is a famous Professor of Geology at the
University of Hamburg, in Germany and he is sixty-five
years old he works with his nephew Axel who is his
personal assistant. The Professor is a very hard working
person so he never comes back home till two o'clock for
lunch till one day…
Martha is his maid and she is surprised because of his
early come. He asks his nephew to go to the library and
shows Axel a book he found in old book shop
The book is seven hundred years old and it is about the old
princess from Norway who came to live in Iceland and it
is very special because it is written in a language no one
uses anymore

10. Inside the book there was a yellow paper with some
strange letters from a strange alphabet. on it which the
professor could not read. T professor takes a dictionary

and ask him to write down.
T message was from Arne Saknussemm, a famous

scientist, and it refers to a volcano at Sneffells Yokul .
T hey have to go before the first of J because the sun
uly
will show the way to the centre of the earth.
T hen, the P rofessor orders M artha to buy two train tickets
to Denmark …

the professor. H is in love with Grauben and he wants

They are going to Denmark by train and by boat to
Iceland
• T whole trip is going to take twelve days, and then

they have to walk to the volcano.
• W hen she hears about the journey she is very happy
and she promises to wait for him. She knows that he
will be famous like his uncle when he come back
• Axel is afraid of the journey because he thinks that
they possible won’t come back

14. • T journey to Iceland began very early in the morning
he
and they can see the round body of the volcano from
the boat. It has snow near the top. T boat stops in

R eykjavik which has small brick houses.
• Professor F ridriksson, a professor from the University
there, met them at the boat.
• Professor L idenbrock doesn’t tell anyone the real
reason of their journey because he wants Axel and him
to be the only one to go to the centre of the E arth. But
they need a guide because they don’t know the area.

• They stay in M F r rederickson's house until they are
ready to leave

16. DEPARTURE
• T departure was from Reykjavik on J

in the morning. T hey travelled along the sea and the
journey took six days, and each day they stopped in a
different village for the night.
• T volcano had its last explosion in 1229.

• They reached the top at eleven o'clock and they found a
small place inside the opening of the volcano.
• Axel dreamt that he was lost and he was shot out of
the volcano’s top like a rock

• NAME: INSIDE THE VOLCANO
• PLACE: ICELAND

18. • T mouth of the volcano was one mile wide and its
he
inside looked like the inside of and ice-cream. T he
bottom was 2,000 feet down. T hey tied a rope around
each other and began to climb down
• W hen they got to the bottom and looked up and saw
the opening at the top it was a perfect circle of clear
blue sky
• There were three holes in the floor of the volcano and
each of them was about a hundred feet wide.
• They didn’t know which one was the correct so they
remembered Arne Saknussemm’s words. H said the
e
sun touches the right one at the end of J une and that
day was J une the 25th and it was very cloudy they had
to wait for a sunny day

19. • Axel though that his uncle left the idea and they would
go back home but he was wrong
• H ans built a small house from the large rocks he found
on the floor of the volcano. H didn’t talk much but he

always thought of something useful to do. T here were
drops of water from the ice and the snow outside ran
down the wall.
• P rofessor Lidenbrock found the name of ¨Arne
Saknussemm¨ written on the walls and he knew that
they were in the right place
• T next day the sun came out at 1:13 pm and touched
he
the right hole to the centre of the earth
• H ans threw the bags down in the hole but they never
heard them hit the bottom because the hole was too
narrow to go down with the bags

20. CHAPTER 5
• NAME: LOST IN THE TUNNELS
• PLACE: INSIDE THE VOLCANO
• CHARACTERS:

21. • They began the climb down putting their ropes on the
sides of the walls and every two hundred feet they
found a flat rock to stop on.
• H ans went first, the Professor and the last one was
Axel. T hey travelled 2,000 feet down for ten hours and
they reached the bottom where there was an open
space like a cave. It continued to the right and their
bags were there.
• T next morning they continued their journey down.

• They used their torches to see the walls clearly. T hey
looked like glass of different colours. Some of it was
red, some was brown, and some was yellow because

tunnels. There were tunnels everywhere, and they
didn’t know which was the right one.
• They were worried because their water finished. F or
this reason Axel offered to go to find a spring. T here
was a loud sound behind the wall next to them that
sounded like the water of a river.
• H ans took a pickaxe and made a hole in the wall and
water came out onto the floor

23. • They continued the journey and Axel walked to far so
he got lost. H couldn’t find the other or come back.

• T hen he fell through the air down a long tunnel. H hit

his head and he faint (everything went black around
him)
