5 ECM ROI MYTHS
AIIM.ORG
Myth # 3 – Total ROI for an ECM implementation can be identified up
front and accounted for in advance.
Reality: ROI for an ECM application can be partially identified before the
system is implemented. However, ECM is a tool that enables ongoing
process improvements and once successfully adopted, breeds further
expansion throughout an organization, with numerous new opportunities
for ROI that couldn’t have been identified at the beginning. The total ROI
for ECM over a one-to-five year period is usually substantially higher than
initially planned.

ROI on ECM gets a pretty bad rap. A Forrester Research survey found 49%
of companies couldn’t calculate the value of their ECM systems. Analyst
firm CMS Watch recently called technology ROI “fiction,” and Gartner has
written about the alternative “value of investment” (VOI).

Let me state my take on ROI calculations as clearly as I can. ROI
calculations for information technology are junk calculations, a fraud, a
nonsense, and a complete waste of time. Clear enough for you? Oh and
by the way, ROI calculations from software vendors are even worse...
ROI assessments are based on the simplistic formula of benefits minus
costs to calculate the return on your investment. But simple is not
always smart, and most if not all the of the benefits in such calculations
are by nature predictive. In other words they are guesses, and in my
experience, almost always overly optimistic -- and fatuous guesses at
that.

Reality: ROI for an ECM application can be partially identified before the system is implemented. However, ECM is a tool that enables ongoing process improvements and once successfully adopted, breeds further expansion throughout an organization, with numerous new opportunities for ROI that couldn’t have been identified at the beginning. The total ROI for ECM over a one-to-five year period is usually substantially higher than initially planned.

Analyst firm CMS Watch recently called technology ROI “fiction,” and Gartner has written about the alternative “value of investment” (VOI). 49% OF COMPANIES CANT´T CALCULATE ECM ROI

ALAN PELZ-SHARP Let me state my take on ROI calculations as clearly as I can. ROI calculations for information technology are junk calculations, a fraud, a nonsense, and a complete waste of time. Clear enough for you? Oh and by the way, ROI calculations from software vendors are even worse... ROI assessments are based on the simplistic formula of benefits minus costs to calculate the return on your investment. But simple is not always smart, and most if not all the of the benefits in such calculations are by nature predictive. In other words they are guesses, and in my experience, almost always overly optimistic -- and fatuous guesses at that. ROI CALCULATIONS...ARE A JOKE....
