Background One of the largest Colleges in Wales Delivering Library & Information Studies (LIS) courses for over 10 years Able to deliver LIS curriculum across Wales
Information & Library Services NVQs ILS NVQs available at levels 2 & 3 Delivered in the workplace – institutions in Mid/South Wales need to provide their own assessors Online support available via Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment) Grants available from CyMALfor candidates (and to train assessors)
ILS NVQ 2 Usually completed in 12 months Complete 6 units Three mandatory units: shelving/shelf tidying, enquiry work & solving customer problems Optional units include display work, cash handling, word processing, circulation procedures, securing material etc Competency based
ILS NVQ 3 Usually completed in 18 months Complete 8 units Four mandatory units: Two enquiry units, managing yourself & solving customer problems Optional units include display work, cash handling, Cat & Class, spreadsheets, supervising staff, indexing, providing orientation exercises etc Aimed at staff with responsibility for staff and/or resources
New Vocational Qualifications Based on new Occupational Standards Replace NVQs Level 2 Certificate Level 3 Diploma Level 4 units (but NO whole award at level 4) Spiky Qualification Easier progression Emphasis on upskilling rather than competency
Applications of ICT in Libraries Two Qualifications: Advanced Diploma & Diploma Developed in Scotland – awarded by SQA Library specific ICT qualification CyMAL grants available Distance learning -use of ICTL website and Moodle Face to face sessions currently being held in north and south Wales Credits can be used towards Foundation Degree or other HE qualifications
ICTL Diploma  SQCF level 7 (level 4 = HNC) Five mandatory units: Enquiry work Reader Development Online learning ICT in professional practice Safe and legal use of ICT
ICTL Advanced Diploma  SQCF level 8 (level 5 = HND) Diploma  One Mandatory Unit: Reflective Practice One Optional Unit: Complex searching or Teaching skills
New ICTL SQCF level 7 qualification Reduced to 4 units out of a choice of 7 (existing units plus two new ones) SCQF level 8 qualification Same credits but now 3 units (out of a choice of 4) No longer have to complete level 7 qualification first
Foundation Degree in Library & Information Management New benchmark undergraduate qualification (equivalent to old HNDs) Studied part-time day release over two years (for students already holding ICTL Adv Dip) Taught sessions are being delivered via video conference (currently to Barry College and Coleg Powys) alongside face-to-face sessions at Coleg Llandrillo Support material available online via Moodle Tutorial support available to candidates in Mid/South Wales Includes workbased modules Validated by University of Wales, currently seeking CILIP accreditation CyMAL grants available via employers

CDG Wales Managing Your Career Library & Information Studies Curriculum at Coleg Llandrillo

  • 2. Background One of the largest Colleges in Wales Delivering Library & Information Studies (LIS) courses for over 10 years Able to deliver LIS curriculum across Wales
  • 3. Information & Library Services NVQs ILS NVQs available at levels 2 & 3 Delivered in the workplace – institutions in Mid/South Wales need to provide their own assessors Online support available via Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment) Grants available from CyMALfor candidates (and to train assessors)
  • 4. ILS NVQ 2 Usually completed in 12 months Complete 6 units Three mandatory units: shelving/shelf tidying, enquiry work & solving customer problems Optional units include display work, cash handling, word processing, circulation procedures, securing material etc Competency based
  • 5. ILS NVQ 3 Usually completed in 18 months Complete 8 units Four mandatory units: Two enquiry units, managing yourself & solving customer problems Optional units include display work, cash handling, Cat & Class, spreadsheets, supervising staff, indexing, providing orientation exercises etc Aimed at staff with responsibility for staff and/or resources
  • 6. New Vocational Qualifications Based on new Occupational Standards Replace NVQs Level 2 Certificate Level 3 Diploma Level 4 units (but NO whole award at level 4) Spiky Qualification Easier progression Emphasis on upskilling rather than competency
  • 7. Applications of ICT in Libraries Two Qualifications: Advanced Diploma & Diploma Developed in Scotland – awarded by SQA Library specific ICT qualification CyMAL grants available Distance learning -use of ICTL website and Moodle Face to face sessions currently being held in north and south Wales Credits can be used towards Foundation Degree or other HE qualifications
  • 8. ICTL Diploma SQCF level 7 (level 4 = HNC) Five mandatory units: Enquiry work Reader Development Online learning ICT in professional practice Safe and legal use of ICT
  • 9. ICTL Advanced Diploma SQCF level 8 (level 5 = HND) Diploma One Mandatory Unit: Reflective Practice One Optional Unit: Complex searching or Teaching skills
  • 10. New ICTL SQCF level 7 qualification Reduced to 4 units out of a choice of 7 (existing units plus two new ones) SCQF level 8 qualification Same credits but now 3 units (out of a choice of 4) No longer have to complete level 7 qualification first
  • 11. Foundation Degree in Library & Information Management New benchmark undergraduate qualification (equivalent to old HNDs) Studied part-time day release over two years (for students already holding ICTL Adv Dip) Taught sessions are being delivered via video conference (currently to Barry College and Coleg Powys) alongside face-to-face sessions at Coleg Llandrillo Support material available online via Moodle Tutorial support available to candidates in Mid/South Wales Includes workbased modules Validated by University of Wales, currently seeking CILIP accreditation CyMAL grants available via employers
