A study was conducted in Morogoro, Tanzania to assess the effect of treated wastewater as an alternative source of irrigation water and nutrients for rice. Wastewater was sourced from a local wastewater Stabilization Ponds and cleaned through a Constructed Wetland. Four treatments namely, (i) Waste water (WW) only (ii) WW + NPK (iii) Tap water only (iv) Tap water + NPK were tested in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replicates. Rice, variety Saro 5 was planted in August 2013.Data was collected on physical-chemical and biological qualities of the WW, and soils, yield and yield components. Analysis of variance and Least Significant Difference (LSD) on yield were conducted (p≤0.05) using INSTAT software. WW had alkaline pH of 8.2 and acceptable levels of physical-chemical-biological components. WW only treated rice resulted in higher yields over non-treated rice. The combination of WW and NPK was not as effective especially for flowering, grain size and total yield indicative of nutrients overloading. Tap water only treated rice yielded 1.3 tons/ha while WW treated rice yielded 5.44 ton/ha mostly through promotion of higher number of fertile tillers while a combination of WW and NPK depressed yield potential to only 1.7 ton/ha. Effectiveness of WW for irrigation is acknowledged.

In recent years, Ussa has faced various challenges in water supply which has been a major concern to law makers and the government of Taraba state. This study therefore is aimed at examining the various problems and prospect of water supply in Ussa Local Government. The specific objectives were to identify the existing sources of water supply in Ussa Local Government of Taraba state, to examine the problems and prospect associated with each source in the study area, and to proffer alternative measure to appropriate quarters. Data were collected from 150 respondent of the study area. The data were analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentage statistics. The results revealed that 87.1% of the respondents agreed that there is water shortage in the area which as a result has led to increase charges by the suppliers, 51.3% said the water was good. More than 60% of the respondent claimed that the population of the study area usually consumes the water directly without any method of purification, and that the water is mostly used for domestic purposes. The study also reveals that 68.1% problem of water supply problem is seasonality and distance to source. Finally, the research shows that there are 28 boreholes existing in the study area while only 15 of the boreholes are functioning at the time when the research was conducted. The study recommends government at all levels to increase investment in providing water to the residents of the study area.

The Himalayas are the sources of big rivers. They also provide a physical screen within which the monsoon system operates and enrich water bodies. Tibet plateau which is also the source of the largest rivers like Indus, Satlej, Brahmaputra, Yaluzangbu, Yellow, Mekong, Yangtze, lies in the north of Himalaya range. Brahmaputra joins Ganga river in Bangladesh. The Indus basin lies in Pakistan, China, Afghanistan and India. Rivers of Himalayas are not only the flows of fresh water but also carry appreciable quantities of sediment to the alluvial the Indo-Gangetic Plain, also known as Indus-Ganga and the North Indian River Plain. This great Ganga plain consists most of northern and eastern India, the most populous parts of Pakistan, plain parts of southern Nepal and virtually all of Bangladesh. Given the seasonal nature of the Himalayan runoff, roughly 75 to 85% of annual flows runs in the summer season only. The impacts of climate change and global warming on Himalayan watersheds have been already noticed. This new challenge has added risk in flow regimes by increasing trend of large peaks in rainy season and decreasing trend in lean season flow. Topography, soils, rainfall, and the availability of water for irrigation have been major determinants of the crop and livestock patterns characteristic of the Himalayas and the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The plain's population density is very high due to the fertile soil for farming. The plains support one of the most populous areas on Earth, being home to nearly 1 billion people. Although there are added risk of flood disasters due to high dams, but the purpose of storage projects in Himalayan region also serve in improving flood security for three northern states of India and Bangladesh. Besides, the stored water would also increase agricultural products many folds. Large reservoirs not only store water for lean season but also increase air moisture in surrounding areas. The Himalayan rivers from Nepal including Tibet, Bhutan and Northern India are recognized as an economic lifeline for the region. In this context, regional cooperation for harnessing the water resources -the renewable natural gift, would benefit the economical growth of vast population. It is now high time to look for a common regional consensus on national and regional policies based on realities, priorities and international norms
