PHYSICAL FITNESS ASPECTS OF SWIMMING 105M
1. Physical Education Higher Still ANALYSIS & DEVELOPMENT OF PERFORMANCE PREPARATION OF THE BODY “… .is a specific analysis of your fitness requirements in performance.” Saint Roch’s Secondary School
2. Physical Education Higher Still It is extremely important to first of all know what the fitness requirements are for the stroke that you are going to work on. We have been looking specifically at PHYSICAL FITNESS. This is what you must focus on in your answer. Areas that are important when swimming 105m Front Crawl are: Q. Can you improve your performance in swimming by working on your personal fitness specific to one stroke/event? Analysis & Development of Performance FLEXIBILITY “ the ability of a muscle or muscles to stretch to allow a joint to move around it’s full range of movement” Saint Roch’s Secondary School
3. Physical Education Higher Still Analysis & Development of Performance DYNAMIC STRENGTH STRENGTH is “ the force a muscle can exert against a resistance ” There are three types of strength : STATIC STRENGTH EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH DYNAMIC STRENGTH Static strength is where muscles do not change length. Dynamic and Explosive strength do change length of muscles. Saint Roch’s Secondary School
4. Physical Education Higher Still Analysis & Development of Performance STATIC STRENGTH The scrum is using Static Strength to prevent the other team from driving back A single action where maximum energy is needed DYNAMIC STRENGTH Fast swimming for a short distance where the action is repeated EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH Saint Roch’s Secondary School
5. Physical Education Higher Still Q. How do physical aspects of fitness translate to stroke technique? Analysis of Performance Flexibility: The shoulders need a good range of movement around the joint to allow the arms and hands to get in a much more effective position in front of the head. They can also extend (stretch) further, creating a far more efficient streamlined body position. This means hands can generate a longer pull and push in the water, with less drag from the body. The hips also allow a greater extension of the legs and ankles, once more helping with the streamlined position and efficiency of the kick. Saint Roch’s Secondary School
6. Physical Education Higher Still Analysis of Performance Dynamic Strength: This is needed in swimming short distances that take up to approximately 2 minutes. The swimmer works the major muscles of the shoulders, arms and legs to generate a constant, continuous force to cause the body to move through the water at a steady speed. The muscles contracting generate the same force every stroke to cause propulsion. This maximal force has to be the same over the full length of the race. IT IS THIS AREA OF FITNESS WHICH GENERALLY NEEDS TO WORKED ON AND IS USUALLY THE CAUSE OF THE SWIMMER SLOWING DOWN OR TAKING MORE AND MORE STROKES EACH SUBSEQUENT LENGTH THEY SWIM.
