Practice What We Preach Slides, 5/23/10
1.
2. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his
disciples: "The teachers of the law and the
Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey
them and do everything they tell you. But do
not do what they do, for they do not practice
what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and
put them on men's shoulders, but they
themselves are not willing to lift a finger to
move them.”
Matthew 23:1-4
3. “The greatest among you will be your servant.
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled,
and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Matthew 23:11-12
4. WOE #1
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the
kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You
yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those
enter who are trying to.”
Matthew 23:13
5. WOE #2
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses
and for a pretense you make long prayers;
therefore you will receive the greater
condemnation.”
Matthew 23:14
6. WOE #3
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land
and sea to win a single convert, and when he
becomes one, you make him twice as much a
son of hell as you are.”
Matthew 23:15
7. WOE #4
"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone
swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if
anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is
bound by his oath.‘ You blind fools! Which is
greater: the gold, or the temple that makes
the gold sacred?
Matthew 23:16-17
8. WOE #5
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and
cumin, and have neglected the weightier
matters of the law: justice and mercy and
faithfulness. These you ought to have done,
without neglecting the others. You blind
guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a
camel!
Matthew 23:23-24
9. WOE #6
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the
cup and the plate, but inside they are full of
greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee!
First clean the inside of the cup and the plate,
that the outside also may be clean.”
Matthew 23:25-26
10. WOE #7
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed
tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but
within are full of dead people’s bones and all
uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear
righteous to others, but within you are full of
hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
Matthew 23:27-28
11. WOE #8
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the
prophets and decorate the monuments of the
righteous, saying, 'If we had lived in the days
of our fathers, we would not have taken part
with them in shedding the blood of the
prophets.'”
Matthew 23:29-30
12. " 'For I will take you out of the nations; I will
gather you from all the countries and bring
you back into your own land. I will sprinkle
clean water on you, and you will be clean; I
will cleanse you from all your impurities and
from all your idols. I will give you a new heart
and put a new spirit in you;
13. I will remove from you your heart of stone and
give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my
Spirit in you and move you to follow my
decrees and be careful to keep my laws. You
will live in the land I gave your forefathers; you
will be my people, and I will be your God.”
Ezekiel 36:24-28
14. If we want the outside of the cup to
be clean, focus on cleaning the
INSIDE! When the inside is cleansed,
good stuff flows out of that
CLEANLINESS!
15. But when the Messiah arrived, high priest of
the superior things of this new covenant, he
bypassed the old tent and its trappings in this
created world and went straight into heaven's
"tent"—the true Holy Place—once and for all.
He also bypassed the sacrifices consisting of
goat and calf blood, instead using his own
blood as the price to set us free once and for
all.
16. If that animal blood and the other rituals of
purification were effective in cleaning up certain
matters of our religion and behavior, think how
much more the blood of Christ cleans up our
whole lives, inside and out. Through the Spirit,
Christ offered himself as an unblemished
sacrifice, freeing us from all those dead-end
efforts to make ourselves respectable, so that we
can live all out for God.
Hebrews 9:11-15
