- Data De-duplication – CA ARCserve Backup now supports data de-duplication to provide you with a cost-effective way of reducing storage needs while protecting critical data. Data de-duplication significantly improves the economics of disk-based solutions for backup by enabling longer retention periods on the same size disks. It is easy to manage, configure, and integrate into existing backup environments. Competitors: Competitor 1 does not offer deduplication today, Competitor 2 does provide this functionality via their agent, which will impact the processing on the backup source. Dashboard with SRM reporting – CA ARCserve Backup Dashboard with Storage Resource Management reporting is an interface that provides you with a snapshot of the activity in your backup infrastructure. It allows you to find the backup job status of historical and recent jobs, find the nodes that are failing the most, the location of backed up data, whether data is encrypted and ready for disaster recovery, information like volume, disk usage, memory, CPU, NIC, SCSI and fiber cards on each of the production servers, and many other types of information. In addition to aiding in improving the performance and reliability of your backup environment, it also helps manage growth planning across your server and storage environment. Competitors: Competitor 1 does not offer a SRM like reporting mechanism today. Competitor 2 does have an SRM solution that provides similar functionality but one has to purchase an additional option to gain this functionality. Suite Licensing - Easy licensing & pricing model makes acquisition simple and eliminates resources needed to manage licenses across your environment. Competitors: Neither Competitor 1 and 2 offer Suite Licensing. Access Control and Auditing (User Profiles) – Define user roles with limited resource access permissions. This capability helps you prevent unauthorized users from accessing backup resources and is integrated with the Windows authentication process enabling you to use your domain login for CA ARCserve Backup access. Some examples of the roles you can select are administrator, backup operator, restore operator, tape operator, and report operator. Auditing provides details on the operations performed by a particular CA ARCserve Backup user and includes the login details so you can trace which user performed what actions. Competitors: Competitor 1 does not have the ability to define user and access rules. Competitor 2 does have the ability to define users and limit their access within the application. Key Management for Encryption – Encryption keys are generated at the time an encrypted backup occurs and are stored in the CA ARCserve Backup database. This makes management of the keys easier and more reliable, especially at time of recovery. Competitors: Competitor 1 does have similar functionality it allows you to specify a passphrase and it generates keys off that passphrase. When the backups happen it will use those keys to encrypt data. And those keys are stored in their database. So as long as those keys are present in database, the application can restore data. In case you lose the database or the keys in database, you would have to type in the passphrase and from this passphrase they would generate the key and use the key to decrypt. This is the reason they ask users to remember passphrases. Competitor 2’s Key management includes the ability to generate random encryption keys for stored data and also manage the secure storage of these keys. The Encryption key, which is stored in the Competitor 2 Database Engine when the chunk is written to the media. The encryption key will be stored after scrambling it with a proprietary encryption. For Data Recovery and Auxiliary Copy operations using the Competitor 2 Console, the specific key will be automatically provided by the software for each chunk. Integrated Anti Virus Protection – Leveraging the eTrust Anti Virus technology we provide the ability to scan each file during the backup process to ensure that infected files are not being written to the destination device (tape or disk). This provides an additional value and assurance the data is protected and can be recovered without incident. Competitors: only Competitor 1 also offers an integrated Anti-Virus solution. Enterprise Scalability – CA ARCserve Backup can be architected to scale to any size environment, having the ability to centrally manage any of the added sources. You can easily deploy additional agents and or media servers to be able to accommodate the additional data protection requests that a data center may receive. Value CA ARCserve Backup makes it easy to manage and deploy reducing costs. Competitors: Competitor 1 and 2 do have the ability to scale their solutions but can be more difficult to deploy. Remote Branch Office Protection - CA ARCserve Backup integrates with CA XOsoft™ Replication to deliver centralized tape-less remote branch office backups. WAN bandwidth-optimized backups eliminate the need for tape backup at your remote offices. Competitors: Competitor 1 and 2 do not have the ability to perform tape-less backups of the branch offices. Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V – CA ARCserve Backup seamlessly integrates Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V into the overall backup process, which simplifies the process of managing backups. This helps to reduce management overhead and operating expenses, and maximizes the benefits of using CA ARCserve Backup to protect your Windows Server 2008 environment. This capability allows you to perform image-level and file-level backups and restores on virtual machines, as well as file-level restores from image-level backups (Granular Recovery). It lets you set up a rotation or schedule of a full, raw-level backup and daily, file-level, incremental/differential backups (mixed backups) on virtual machines. VMware VCB support – Provides greater manageability and usability for protecting VMware environments by providing the ability to restore individual files from a VM image backup (Granular restore). This capability allows you to perform image-level and file-level backups and restores on virtual machines, as well as file-level restores from image-level backups (Granular Recovery). It lets you set up a rotation or schedule of a full, raw-level backup and daily, file-level, incremental/differential backups (mixed backups) on virtual machines. Competitors: Competitor 1 requires a staged recovery cannot perform a granular restore. Competitor 2 also leverages a staged recovery approach leveraging a proxy server for backup and recovery. Multiplexing Backup Method – CA ARCserve Backup provides the ability to perform Multiplexing backup jobs.
