Celebrating schools October 2010
1. The Big Assembly Pupils from St Ursula’s, Greenwich watched CAFOD films as they awaited the Pope’s arrival for the Big Assembly. One pupil said: “ Today is a great opportunity to meet other people and to celebrate with students from all over.” October 2010
2. The Big Assembly Sixth formers from St Thomas More Upper School, Bedford were interviewed by CAFOD and gave their reactions to the event: “… one of the strongest messages is that of valuing being part of a community that’s so inclusive. It’s like being part of a huge family which looks out for others.” October 2010
3. Visiting the Pope… and CAFOD! 26 young delegates from across England and Wales met at CAFOD headquarters for a weekend of activities to learn more about social justice, attend the papal visit and explore how to weave their experience into being leaders for social change. October 2010
4. Notre Dame, Sheffield This month, sixth formers at Notre Dame invited Nick Clegg MP to hear their concerns about poverty and climate change. Mr Clegg said: "It's inspiring to see the great work the kids have done to support CAFOD's Act on Poverty campaign.” He agreed to take their call to action back to Westminster. October 2010
5. St Mary’s, Blackpool Rachel McCarthy is spending her gap year with CAFOD, based at St Mary’s College in Blackpool. For Harvest Fast Day she helped pupils make and sell these very special cards. October 2010
6. Last year Holy Family High School pledged to raise £3,300 to provide a hundred clean water filters for Nigeria – and is now closing in on this ambitious target. For Harvest Fast Day, students melted down Fairtrade bars brought in as payment for a non-uniform day into a chocolate fountain, and raised £250! October 2010 Holy Family, Carlton Headteacher Rob Pritchard, Connor, Niamh, Chris, Aine, and Head of RE, Marie Evans.
7. Holy Family, Carlton In July, the school presented a cheque for £2,580 to Fr. Blaise Agwom from Jos, Nigeria, after a year’s fundraising. A CAFOD market was just one of the many fundraising events. Well done, and thanks for a magnificent effort! October 2010
8. Northfields Parish Young people from St Peter and Paul’s Parish in Northfields, London spoke at Mass about CAFOD’s work and boosted the Harvest Fast Day collection. Well done and thank you! October 2010
9. St Anne’s, Enfield Pupils at St Anne’s Catholic High School held a collection for Harvest Fast Day and raised £711.18. Vicky Ahmed from CAFOD was presented with the cheque at a special assembly where they learned how CAFOD helps Jeanne in Rwanda and other young people like her. October 2010
