The film addresses its audience through a third person perspective without using point-of-view shots, which creates distance and makes the film less scary. A blackout during a murder scene leaves the action to the imagination of the audience. The film may scare female audiences more as the victim is a normal teenage girl. Most thrillers involve protagonists in their mid-20s to appeal to cinema-going audiences in that age group who can relate to the characters. The film draws similarities to other psychological thrillers involving troubled children through its costumes, backstory, and forest setting.
2. Perspective
• The opening scene has been created from 3rd
point of view where the audience is watching
and observing rather than being part of the film.
• We have used many over shoulder shots and long
shots to make the seem like they are there
watching it.
• We have not used point of view shots as this
would make them feel in the place of the victim.
• The fact that the film is taken from a 3rd persons
perspective makes it less scary and doesn't make
the viewer feel part of it and they would feel
safer. This makes it an appropriate film for 15 year
olds.
3. Camera effects
• In the murder scene we have used a
black out which creates suspense as
not everything is revealed and
witnessed by the audience. This is
effective as it leaves the murder scene
to the audiences imagination to
create and also the fact that there is a
scream heard in the blackout is scary,
unexpected and very effective.
4. Gender
• In the opening scene the girl is murdered
when going out to meet a friend. She is a
normal average girl. This may create
extra fear for girls rather than boys as girls
may be able to connect with the victim
as they also maybe average girls which
go out at night. As for boys, they would
probably be less scared as firstly its a girl
being murdered and secondly they
would believe they can physically go
against a 14 year old girl.
5. Age
• In most thrillers people in their mid 20s are
represented as being prone to accidents and
murders.
• Thrillers mostly involve that age group as they are
one of the highest age groups which attend
cinemas and watch movies so are a bigger
target audience and would connect with the
characters more.
• This would effect them more as they may
become paranoid since they can put themselves
in the characters place.
• Our character is also 20 which would mean other
people in their 20s can connect with the
character and this would scare them more.
6. Similarity
• Our film is quite similar to films like Orphan, The
orphanage, One missed call, mama, the ring, exorcist.
• The thing that all these films have in common is that
the child is the antagonist and in all these films the
child has some sort of psychological problem. This is
similar to our film so people who have watched those
films may be interested and watch our film too.
• We have used similar costumes like in the film Mama
were the kids are found wearing night gowns which is
similar to what our antagonist is wearing.
• Also like the other films our antagonist is the way she is
due to having a horrible childhood and upbringing
and she is also an orphan like the other films.
• We chose the setting as wood sand forests are thriller
conventions and where most scary things take place.
