conflict with opposing foreign force
• While serving with friendly forces engaged in
armed conflict against an opposing force in
which the U.S is not a belligerent party
5. Robert Temple Emmet
• 2nd Lt. in the U.S Army
• Indian War Campaigns
• Las Animes canyon, New Mexico
• September 18, 1879 he and his 5 men were
surrounded by Indians and Emmet held his
position and fought back until his men
reached safety

• 1st Lt. in the U.S Army
• War with Spain
• Mouth of Manimani River
• July 23rd 1898 After 2 of his men had been
shot down by Spaniards, he remained at his
position until the ship he was on was out of
danger

• Private 1st Class in WWI
• Near Belleau, France
• July 18th 1918 he was shot by an enemy
machine gunner, but still managed to shoot
down the gunner along with 2 other enemies
while his men got to safety
