26. Grief, Bereavement & Mourning Grief - Intense sorrow caused by the loss of a loved one (especially by death). The normal process of reacting to loss. Reactions to grief: Mental - Anger, guilt, anxiety, sadness, and despair. Physical – Sleeping problems, changes in appetite, illness. Social - Desire to take care of others in family, seeing family and friends, seclusion. Bereavement – The period after a loss during which grief is experienced and mourning occurs. Bereavement times can vary based on how attached the person was to the person who died, and the length of time spent on anticipating the loss. Mourning – Process of how people adapt to the loss of someone or something. Influenced by cultural customs, religion, rituals, and socio-historical influences.
27. Five Phases of Grief Denial - The refusal to acknowledge the existence or severity of unpleasant external realities or internal thoughts and feelings. Anger - A strong feeling of displeasure or hostility that is oriented toward some real or supposed grievance. Bargaining - When an individual attempts to postpone or delay death by negotiating with a higher power or the world at large. Depression - A mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity. Acceptance – When the individual begins to come to terms with their mortality or that of their loved one.
