The 25 largest U.S. less-than-truckload carriers raised their combined revenue 3.9 percent to $29.5 billion in 2013, continuing a long, slow recovery from a disastrous 2009, when the LTL group lost nearly 25 percent of its revenue. The JOC and SJ Consulting Group annually rank the top 25 LTL trucking companies and track the sector’s progress toward economic recovery. Years of network re-engineering are beginning to pay off for many of the large carriers, though mid-sized companies on the Top 25 list grew the fastest in 2013. Altogether, the Top 25 LTL carriers account for almost 90 percent of total LTL trucking revenue.

Given that most companies are struggling to achieve healthy growth in the current climate, fraudulent activity cannot be tolerated, however minor some of the individual ‘crimes’ being committed appear to be. While the typical employee misdemeanour may not be on the same scale as those that transpired from the recent MPs’ expenses scandal, the amounts involved soon add up and can present a risk to company profits. Alarmingly, KPMG uncovered a dramatic increase in the number of cases involving the exploitation of weak internal controls – up to 74% in 2011 from 49% in 2007. This suggests that many organisations are not adequately protecting themselves from losses incurred through employee crime. It is also likely that the problems are more widespread and costly than these surveys suggest, since many cases of fraud go unreported either because companies are failing to monitor and measure instances of internal crimes, particularly below a certain threshold, or because they prefer to handle any cases that do emerge internally to minimise any negative PR. What could have driven the managers of Continental Illinois Bank to pursue a course of action that threatened to bankrupt the institution, ruined its reputation, and cost thousands of innocent employees and investors their jobs and their savings? Why did managers at E.E Hutton find themselves pleading guilty to 2,000 counts of mail and wire fraud, accepting a fine of $2 million, and putting up an $8 million hind for restitution to the 400 banks that the company had systematically bilked? How can we explain the misbehavior that took place in these organizations - or in any of the others, public and private, that litter our newspapers' front pages: workers at a defense contractor who ac- cused their superiors of falsifying time cards; alleged bribes and kickbacks that honeycombed New York City government; a company that knowingly marketed an unsafe birth control device; the decision-making pro- cess that led to the space shuttle Challenger tragedy. ''When in doubt, don'tr The stories are always slightly different; but they have a lot in common since they're full of the oldest questions in the world, questions of human behavior and human judgment applied in ordinary day- to-day situations. Reading them we have to ask how usually honest, intelligent, compassionate human be- ings could act in ways that are callous, dishonest, and wrongheaded. In my view, the explanations go back to four rationalizations that people have relied on through Mr. Gellerman is dean of the University of Dallas Graduate School of Management. He is the author of eight books on management and of the HBR article "Supervision: Substance and Style" (March-April 1976). the ages to justify questionable conduct: believing that the activity is not "really" illegal or immoral; that it is in the individual's or the corporation's best interest; that it will never be found out; or that because it helps the company the company will condone it. By looking at these rationalizations in light of these cases, we can develop some practical rules to more effectively control managers' actions that lead to trouble-control, but not eliminate. For the hard truth is that corporate misconduct, like the lowly cockroach, is a plague that we can suppress but never exterminate. Three cases Amitai Etzioni, professor of sociology at George Washington University, recently concluded that in the last ten years, roughly two-thirds of Ameri- ca's 500 largest corporations have been involved, in varying degrees, in some form of illegal behavior. Who is winning? FOREIGN POLICY, APRIL 15, 2016 ============ At first glance, the story of Accenture reads like the archetype of the American dream. One of the world’s biggest consulting companies, which commands tens of billions of dollars in annual revenues, was born in the 1950s as a small division of accounting firm Arthur Andersen. Its first major project was advising General Electric to install a computer at a Kentucky facility in order to automate payment processing. Several decades of growth followed, and by 1989, the division was successful enough to become its own organization: Andersen Consulting. Yet a deeper look at the business shows its ascent veering off the American track. This wasn’t because it opened foreign offices in Mexico, Japan, and other countries; international expansion is pro forma for many U.S. companies. Rather, Andersen Consulting saw benefits—fewer taxes, cheaper labor, less onerous regulations — beyond borders and restructured internally to take advantage of them. By 2001, when it went public after adopting the name Accenture, it had morphed into a network of franchises loosely coordinated out of a Swiss holding company. It incorporated in Bermuda and stayed there until 2009, when it redomiciled in Ireland, another low-tax jurisdiction. Today, Accenture’s roughly 373,000 employees are scattered across more than 200 cities in 55 countries. Consultants parachute into locations for commissioned work but often report to offices in regional hubs, such as Prague and Dubai, with lower tax rates. To avoid pesky residency status, the human resources department ensures that employees don’t spend too much time at their project sites. Welcome to the age of metanationals: companies that, like Accenture, are effectively stateless. When business and strategy experts Yves Doz, José Santos, and Peter Williamson coined the term in a 2001 book, metanationals were an emerging phenomenon, a divergence from the tradition of corporations taking pride in their national roots. (In the 1950s, General Motors President Charles Wilson famously said, “What was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa.”) Today, the severing of state lifelines has become business as usual. ExxonMobil, Unilever, BlackRock, HSBC, DHL, Visa—these companies all choose locations for personnel, factories, executive suites, or bank accounts based on where regulations are friendly, resources abundant, and connectivity seamless.
