AS Media Studies Foundation Portfolio Evaluation

1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
      conventions of real media products?
The film that our group has created I believe uses the conventions of a real media
superhero film as such as in superman and kickass the hero is a teenager and life at
the start is not the best for him at the start of a movie when he loses his friend this
can be seen from when he walks in the shop with no-one and when his friend is in
another location without him after being together. Another main area where our
superhero film massively fits into the normal superhero genre is how its main
characters are all males such as in batman, Spiderman and the majority of other
films this is a traditional convention across superhero movies. The film also has the
starting part to a chase when the two main characters we have already met the
superhero follows his old friend this happens near the sequences end this theme will
be a continued theme through the movie if created past our sequence. Our movie I
also think develops the superhero idea in how it tells the story of part of what has
happened after we originally meet our main characters from the news broadcast
which talks about a bomb going off then releasing a thought to the viewers of what
brought the characters apart this will be also partnered by a voice over through the
sequence which is more of a use of normal superhero ideas.
Below can be seen the characters once walking into the shop together then only one
on his own also the news reporting which is more of a challenge to normal
      conventions.
Andrew Bennett

2- How does your media product represent particular social group?
The media product that we have created I believe represents, two main areas of
social groups being teenagers/young adults and adults, we have chosen to represent
the adults in the short early sequence as news readers who are reporting on the
story of the bomb outbreak, and then being shown in a professional line of work.
The way that we represented the younger group was in the superhero and his friend
(the Villain), where they are seen when they used to be friends and what happened
after they fell out how they were now lonely. When looking into the stereotypes of
the social groups I think the only stereotype we have used is that we used adults to
show a professional role, which is a realistic interpretation of real life.
Below shown the more professional news reporters and the younger teenagers still
attending school before and after they have fallen out.

3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The media company that may consider distributing our film I think should be a major
British film distributor as the release would be focused mainly on the UK. The
distributor I think should be Paramount Pictures UK as it fits more into one of their
film types as a superhero movie such as Iron Man which is probably the main
comparison in movie as both are in recent times and deal with threats which are
currently occurring. The company as the film is surrounding a British agenda and is
based in Britain then should be British. I think that the film should only be distributed
in Britain then, released around the rest of the world within months after but Britain
Andrew Bennett

must be first as it is set and has main British themes. I think the cinema should be
the main way to distribute the product into the audience’s eyes then it will go onto
the DVD and be sold around the world in attempt to gain the most profit.

4- Who would be the audience for your media product?
The main target audience for our film will be teenagers as the movie’s main part will
be the superhero as a teenager when he will be shown fighting against the enemy’s
and also the action and adventure, along with the language used will fit the
teenager’s idea of a good movie. The film’s main teen target will be males aged
around twelve to thirty who are excited by the action and fighting scenes used in the
film later on this and also would be interested by the adrenaline from watching the
action movie. The viewers of superhero and action movies would also be appealed
by our movie and would be entertained so come to watch it. The secondary
audience for the product would be just general people who want to watch a film to
entertain them; I think that we could attract such an audience from advertising
campaigns offering the thrill of your life like current campaigns can do to ask you to
      purchase goods.

5- How did you attract/address your audience?
The way which we would attract our audience is offer to excitement and also as the
actors are all in the age range of the main demographic they would be attracted I
think the excitement can be seen in our extract in many places especially the end
where there is about to be a chase and left on a cliff hanger so must watch the
reminder of the movie. The final way which the viewers would be attracted is the
title of the film which is the domino effect and makes people wonder what is going
tohappen in the next part. Also the attraction by the factor it is a superhero film will
help to attract the audience that is wanted which is a large genre and attract popular
      viewers of this category.

6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
      product?
What I have learned from going through the constriction process of creating my
movie is firstly how to film and use different techniques that will help the filming
process when using a camera such as using the 180 degrees rule and how the mise-
en-scene used can affect the viewing of the film at a later stage so greatly such as in
the shot shown the two characters are wearing school uniform and this will help
show the age of them, this is mise-en-scene from costume.

I also learned much more about using the Mac computers and how to edit my work
to make a much more professional product than previously before where I would
have used windows movie maker, as here I used iMovie where I learned about the
program from scratch to produce a good final product using transitions and effects.
Also I have developed my skills in learning about production and how a film would be
produced if in a real film producing industry, if I was to go through the process again
I would build it so that the storyboard and script would have been focused upon
more and then when filming in the shots all the angles wanted could have been
produced and focused upon more giving more time to consider these areas.

7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
From the beginning of the process to build my media project I have built upon the
previous task which was looking at and filming part from four weddings and a funeral
we did to learn about the upcoming project I firstly believe that I could take into
consideration more of how the planning to shoot was done as when we got to the
location in filming we discussed about how we think the shot should be and used the
storyboard to develop from this, which was not available in the prelim task. I also
have discovered how to use iMovie with more detail and used it to add better
transitions than the prelim along with how to use the sound features when using
iMovie to enhance the sound of quieter clips. I also see I have progressed in using
the tripod as from this it allowed us to have a steady shot and this is required in
most areas of filming which is an improvement from filming the prelim.
