TECHNOLOGICAL COMPLEXITY IN YOUR LIFETIME
Change has been a characteristic of human life from the beginning. While
the pace of change may have been slower thousands of years ago, change
and innovation have always been evident in human societies. Sometimes
change can be subtle and it may take time for people to realize it’s
happening. Later in the course, for example, you will study the Industrial
Revolution. People living during this “revolution” didn’t talk about the
dramatic changes in how they lived and worked until about 50 years after
the revolution started. In contrast, changes in technology have been rapid
in the last 50 years, particularly since the time you were born. It’s very
unlikely that anyone who has lived through the last 20 years would argue
that technology is changing very slowly.
With your partner, brainstorm a list of all the technology that’s been invented since you were born.
When you’ve finished, your teacher will create a master list of all the technologies that the different groups came
up with.
Does the fact that all these technologies have been invented in the last 15 years surprise you? Do you think that the
pace of change and the complexity of technology will remain the same, taper off, or increase? Why?
