The document describes the development of sign designs intended to encourage parents to help their children with homework. The initial design did not draw enough attention and had text that was difficult to read. Subsequent designs experimented with changing the picture, background color, and formatting of the text. The final design addressed issues with text alignment and readability by grouping related images and text together based on principles of design.

1. My goal with these designs was to create something that would be appropriate as a sign to encourage parents to do more to help their children with homework. I wanted to make it look fun and enjoyable. My intended audience is parents of elementary school children who work long hours and often do not have the chance or are unsure of how to help their children with homework. My message to parents is that any help that they give their child will help their child become a more successful student. I am also trying to convey the message of homework being a fun bonding time between parent/child.

3. This design was okay, but didn’t draw attention like I wanted it to. The title text that overlaps with the picture is a bit hard to read. Also, the subtitle seems out of the way.

5. I decided to change the picture to something more abstract and keep the title and subtitle together. However, the text was a bit hard to read on this design, so I ended up making a different design with a lighter background later on.

7. When we were asked to play with color, that is one of the designs that I came up with. I was going off of the colors on the boy’s shirt and they worked well with what we were learning because they were complementary colors. However, the bright orange is a bit much. I also played with the body text, trying to get it to be in shorter lines to be easier to read.

9. This is my final design, keeping the ideas of text, alignment, proximity, etc. in mind. I had a hard time figuring out a way to align the body text and the picture of the mother/son effectively, so I took a look at some of Garr Reynold’s designs and decided to create a grouping of pictures.
