3. Location was selected May 14, 1607 by Cpt. Edward Maria Wingfield, president of the council. Harsh weather, lack of water and attacks by the Powhatan nation almost destroyed the colony. John Smith was capture in Dec, of 1607 while seeking food, and was taken to meet the chief of the Powhatan Confederacy. Smith was eventually released without harm which he attributes to the actions of the chiefs daughter, Pocahontas. Smith said that she threw her body across his body. Jamestown
4. Smith did not exaggerate the facts like many writers did. He did not boast of the abundance of gold, instead he made clear the monetary opportunity in the form of industry.
