international telecommunications cabling
standards
• TIA (Telecommunications Industry
Association) TR-42 – US and Canadian national
telecommunications cabling standards
• BICSI – international standards and guidelines
for information technology systems
The organizations in this update
• ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 25 includes experts from 29
countries & observers from 18 other countries
• TIA TR-42 includes experts from 60+ US and
Canadian organizations
• BICSI Standards includes 400+ members,
mostly from the end-user and consultant
community
The organizations in this update
• All three organizations are busier than they
ever have been developing new standards &
updating existing ones
Why you should care about standards
• Ensures that the cabling system works properly
• Ensures cabling system is easy to use and
maintain
• Combined knowledge of many of the best
industry experts in their respective fields
• Standards are an inexpensive way for you to
learn from these experts and apply their
knowledge to your projects

tree or full mesh) and how to support them using
structured cabling
–Low-latency switch fabric that is non-blocking,
permitting any port to communicate with any other
port at the full capacity of the port
–Switch fabrics are needed for cloud computing
and may be needed for virtualization

TIA – Published in 2013 & 2014
• TIA TSB-4979 Practical Considerations for
Implementation of Encircled Flux Launch
Conditions in the Field
– Information for users to understand encircled
flux and the options for using it
– Using encircled flux reduces optical loss
measurement uncertainty and increases
consistency when performed with different
sources & should be a requirement in contracts
– For those who test or specify fiber testing
TIA – Published in 2013 & 2014
• ANSI/TIA-607-B-2 – Structural Metal
Addendum
– Harmonizes with ISO/IEC 30129 Telecom
Bonding standard in development
– Permits the use of an electrically
continuous building structural metal frame
to be used in place of a dedicated
telecommunications bonding backbone
– For those who design or specify telecom
bonding
TIA – Published in 2013 & 2014
• ANSI/TIA TSB-162-A – cabling guidelines for
wireless access points
– For designers of wireless LANs
– Guidelines for designing cabling for WLANs. Changes
include:
• Recommends multiple outlets, Category 6A, or OM3
MMF to support higher bandwidth requirements of
new wireless standards (e.g., 7.3 Gbps for IEEE
802.11ac)
• More access point mounting options and physical
security information
– Similar standard for DAS - TIA TSB-5008 cabling
guidelines for DAS initiated June 2014 with late-
2015/early-2016 target
TIA – Published in 2013 & 2014

room sizes: intermediate backbone 9 m2
/
100 ft2
, horizontal cabling 11 m2
/ 120 ft2
• Reduce requirement for clearance above
cable trays from 12” min to 8” min, 12”
recommended
• Maximum cabinet & rack height
recommended, but not required to be 7 feet
• Important to all who use TIA standards
TIA – Published in 2015

TIA Standards in Development
• TIA-568-C.2-1 Category 8 (2015)
• Similar to ISO/IEC Category 8.1 (screened
cable that uses 8-pin ‘RJ45’ jack)
• Uses 24 m permanent link with 2 x 3 m 24
AWG cords (2 x 4 m with 22 AWG cords)
• Considering Category 8.2/Class II
• Consider 24 m cabling distances for new data
center designs to permit upgrade to Cat 8
TIA Standards in Development
• TIA-604-18-A / FOCIS-18 Type MPO-16 fiber
• Specification for 16- and 32-fiber MPOs
• Key offset to side to avoid confusion with
12- and 24-fiber MPOs
• Estimated 2015
• For manufacturers of MPO connectors
• Permits better utilization of optical fibers than
MPO-12 because 40G and 4-lane 100G Ethernet
use 8 fibers. 400G Ethernet will probably use
32 MM fibers and 2x16 MPO.
TIA Standards in Development
• TIA-568.0-D, TIA-568.1-D, TIA-568.2-D, TIA-568.3-D –
Updates to base standards
• recognize broadband coaxial cable (TIA-568-C.4),
• Cat 3, OM1, OM2, OS1 not supported
• 2-fiber minimum
• Recommend Cat 6A and add Cat 8
• PON splitter/coupler specs
• Min inside bend radius for fiber cord 25 mm / 1 in or
manufacturers spec (for bend insensitive fiber)
• Min bend radius for 4-pair UTP 4x cord diam (was 1x)
• Important to all who use TIA standards – 568.0-D,
568.1-D, and 568.3-D will publish concurrently in 2015
before 568.2-D (2016)
TIA Standards in Development
