1. NANOTECHNOLOGYIN AGRICULTURE
ABSTRACT
Agricultural scientists are facing a wide spectrum of challenges suchas
stagnationin crop fields,declining soil organic matter,multi-nutrient
deficiencies,climate change, shrinking arable land, and shortage of
labour besides exodus of people from farming. To address these
problems,there is a need to explore one of the frontier technologies
such as ‘NANOTECHNOLOGY’ to precisely detect and deliver the correct
quantitiy of nutrients and pesticides that promote productivity while
ensuring environmental safety and higher use efficiency.
Nanotechnology basedproducts and its applications in agriculture
include nano-fertilizers,nano-herbicides, nano-pesticide, nano-scale
carriers,nanosensors etc.It is now emerging and fast growing field of
science which is being exploitedover a wide range ofdisciplines such as
physics,chemistry,biology,material science,electronics,medicine,
energy, environment and healthsectors.
2. NANOTECHNOLOGYIN FOOD PACKAGING
Use of nanomaterials in food packaging is already a reality.One example
is bottles made with nanocomposites that minimizes the leakage of
carbondioxide out of the bottle; this increases the shelf life of
carbonatedbeverages without having to use heavier glass bottles or
more expensive cans. There are other food packaging products currently
under development. For example nanosensors inplastic packaging can
detect gases given off by food when it spoils and the packaging itself
changes color to alert you to food gone bad. These films are packed with
silicate nanoparticles to reduce the flowof oxygeninto the package and
the leaking of moisture out ofthe package. There are also nanosensors
being developed to detect pesticides onfruits and vegetables.
Nanosensors are being developed that can detect bacteriaand other
contaminates suchas salmonellaonthe surface offood at a packaging
plant. This point-of-packaging testing,if conducted properly,has the
potential to dramatically reduce the chance of contaminatedfood
reaching grocery store shelves.
CONCLUSION
Nanotechnology is a revolutionary science that will change all what we
knew before. This new technology will first of all keep us healthy
because of nanorobots that will repair every damage that we have in our
body. Secondly it will give scientists the ability to manipulate the
combinationof atoms in an object and to turn it into a lighter and
stronger.Thirdly it will give us an abundant energy because it will
transform energy more effectively
