I am an online training facilitator and coach for training organisations moving onto the virtual classroom. I have been working in creating and delivering CPD in various shape or form for the past 10 years and I set up the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor Live online training programme from 2010 until 2013 and RICS received an award for one of the programme we set up together.
I am passionate about professional development because it is a way to empowering people and support them to achieve their goals and their dreams.
Who has already launched a suite of webinars and would like
Who is thinking about launching live online in the next 6 months?
In the next 12?
Who is just there to see what is out there?
There are quite a lot to cover today and I am really pride myself in delivering what is promised so be ready
What is value for your members. Why do they hope to achieve by being one of your members?
Being every grumpy members there is someone aking for help to achieve something very personal
How will your Online CPD Programme will help your members achieve their career goal?
How can technology help you Can you really do it with a 60 min webinars?
Yes you will save them time but how will have they learnt to grow their skills and competences by the end of it?
What is value in learning?
-> Who wants to try? Any volontaire?
Now today we are looking into e-learning. And maybe the first question to ask before starting to push hurs of CPD down your members’ throat is which members are asking for E-Learning either synchronous or A-Synchronous?
THE DATA ISSUE -
For which slice of your membership, would a high value online course appeal the most?
If you have very precise data about your members you will probably be able to identify which groups will support a move to e-learning. Their endorsement will be essential to expend your portfolio. If you have limited data, you will have to use your knowledge and your colleagues knowledge to built assumptions and profiles.
There are three key data you are bound to have about your members which will help you tremedously in setting up profiles:
Green tick/ Red cross
Do you think Mark is the ideal candidate profile for VILT?
When you develop profile for your members, talk to a couple of members fitting the profile and create an avatar with a name, a picture and a life: family, hobbies.
It may sound silly but when you create a programme for this person, it will help you see how easy it will be for this person to access, when is best, and what they will be able to do better afterwards.
-> It is great to create content and even more powerful when it will be time to market it .
Explain the difference between them all
Information based – standalone sessions
Webcast is a recording
Webinar is generally a free or low value presentation/lecture with a short Q&A at the end
Competence or skills based
VILT or certificate are based on multiple sessions. At the end of the course led for a small group the participants will be able to do something better. They were not able to do before
You can run all of them based on 1 technology but the value and the structure around it is very different
Are you clear with the technology available on the market and what they offer?
Is anybody wanting to know more about the technology?
It is really hard to talk about technology without demonstrating what it does. So if you are interested with technology I can send you a link to white paper where I compare the three main stream providers Webex, Adobe Connect and GoTo ,list others which I don’t have firsthand experience and and sugggest in details some technical set up with no investment
So
You can run all of them based on 1 technology but the value and the structure around it is very different.
The format:
The certificate and Online training will be designed for a very small number of participants. No more than 20 learners.
And the course content will be structured in a very specific way
Hard to read
But basically it is a one day course converted into online. It is a course not a converence so it should be 12 to 15 people on it.
Max 20
They want to achieve something: Let’s say build an infrastructure for a virtual classroom
Week 1: trial of 2 different providers and set up framework of the virtual classroom: Your community/facebook/linkedin
You are paired with an other professional and you are going to review each other infrastrucure + explain in 500 words what you like and don’t like about ythe two software you are comparing.
let assume there is a live session once a week and your m
By the thrid session you will be assessed on building an example of virtual classroom with the key component
This is my teaching system. It has been tested and it works.
Back to our example: we want to
However if you go on a course; spend 20 min thinking about what you should be putting in your instruction with a partner, then debrief with the group , then you get your facilitator SME to tell you how you should lay it out.
And then you are sent away to produce your instruction which will be reviewed in the next session
Conclusion: by session 2, you got a set of instruction validated and ready to be used. It has taken you less than 4 hours and you will avoid any incident on your first session.
This is value: job done ! Moving on …
The grey box is your virtual classroom. Let me describe it for you and I would like you to think for a second to existing online places combining most of this features let me explain
Expectation- rules and commitment: written paragraph/video
Access to live session: Link to live session
Course material: file managers or/links
Private discussion group
Assessment can be done in the shape of a survey (most survey tools have a right and wrong answer mecanism)
-> So have you seen recently a places or places online capables of this features?
-Who has a community? Who can create private group on their community?
Who has heard of Facebook or linked in
Now we have our infrastructure set up. How do you identify topic suitability for online learning
Any idea?
Can you teach flying a plane online? Raise your hand if you think it is possible! Brain surgery? Neither
Answer: can you assess it online? So for example, there are a lot of skills and competences necessary to fly a plance which can be tough online: Loading, maps, weather forecasting and so on
Can you learn to fly a plane, drive a car, swim… online?
Who think you can? Raise your hand
Who think you can’t? Raise your hand
I agree you can’t. Why though? Can you identify a single criterion which will clearly divide
If you can assess the application of the learning online then it is suitable for online learning
Method of assessment
Questionnaire
Essaie
Interview
In a nutshell, pretty much anything taught in a normal classrooom without any specific equipment can be taught online.
Even if you want to do good and offer low cost learning unfortunately for anything to be perceived as valuable it has to be desirable and has a price tag.
From my very own experience: I signed up for an amazing MOOC course. I love it, it is extremely well done and help me in the design of courses. I am still 2/3 through and haven’t touched it in 3 months. I signed up for an other course with a hefty price tag on it and regular interface with the facilitator. And trust me, whatever my level of work I will not miss any deadline:
Because I have significantly invested in myself and want to make the most of every single penny I have spent
Because I don’t want to join a course and have to lose face in front of the group and admit I haven’t found the time to do my assignement and … loose part of the value of the session
Average trainer is paid £350/day – So if you offer £100 per session it will free
Do you pay or not the presenter? -> It is all worth it to invest in SME you will be able to call for on a regular basis.
How many sessions are you planning to run a month - > As soon as
Are you planning to repeat sessions
Why would the value of a course online be lower than a face to face?
Do you have any argument you may have heard in your organisation?
This is my personal views and I am open to argument but:
You are offering more value than a F2F due to the spreadout learning experience and the practice
Increased netwroking through social media
Emphasis on change of behaviour and not only information retention
No travel
Little work disruption
Conclusion: It is not because it is online that it must be cheaper. I would almost say, on the contrary
-> And if you lower the price compare to a face to face then you may be affecting the income of your classroom portfolio.
How will you assess the success of your programme?
Is it going to be:
Number of session delivered
Financials
Members increased level of skills and competence
So my conclusion is, if you have already invested in live online training or if you are about to do it, make the most of all the truly amazing capablities of the technology. And yes, you are very likely to start with a webinar or learning bite programme but don’t stop just there …
There are members out there who are waiting for you to come up with this truly amazing e-learning programme which will change their life
Why would you want to deliver more than knowledge? Because as a trade association or a membership body, your members are very likely to expect knowledge to be delivered for free or shall I say, included in their membership fees.
To really offer an educational programme online which generate value for your members , it is quite es
