How long have you been teaching people to cook?
Do you do a lot of baking at home?
Were cakes and baking a big part of your childhood?
What is your favourite cake to make?
Why do you think people enjoy baking so much?
Do you think cakes are an important part of our society?
Did you always know you wanted a career to do with
cooking/baking?
What do you believe is different about British cakes and
cakes from other cultures?
What tips would you give people if they were going to start
baking for the first time?
Cooking teacher (After
school classes)
 For this interview we filmed at the cake

decorating classes. We filmed the teacher at
this location in order to maintain natural
mise-en-scene.
 This interview was a success, but we will not
be using this interview in our documentary
due to the similarity with another interview.
Cutaways...
 Whilst we where interviewing the after school

cooking teacher we asked for permission
from the students before hand to film them
decorating their cakes.
 This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for
the answers that where given from this
interview.

How long have you been teaching food technology?
Do you bake cakes outside of school?

If so what type of cakes do you make?
What valuable skills do you think you can gain from baking?
Do you teach students to bake cakes for different dietary
requirements?
 If so what specific types of recipes do you teach for this?
Do you think young students enjoy baking cakes more than other
foods?
Are there more types of cakes being baked in school compared to a
couple of years ago?
Do you teach students to bake a wide variety of cakes from different
cultures?

If so what cultures do you teach the most of?
Given the increased awareness of cake baking thanks to programmes
like the ‘Great British Bake off’ and ‘The Cake Boss’, do you think we
will see more time spent on cooking/baking lessons in school?
Do you think students see cake baking as an older person’s activity
rather than something quite trendy?
Cooking Teacher
 For this interview we interviewed Mrs O’Hea

after lesson time in her classroom in order to
maintain natural mise-en-scene then we
where able to add baked cakes into the
background to keep it related to the topic.
 This interview was successful the first time as
the answers given where relevant and
good, the framing was correct and the miseen-scene was good.

3.

What has been your most unusual/ crazy request?

4.

Do people tend to go for more traditional designs or more individual
designs specifically of them?

5.

6.

Have you seen any growing trends in the designs people are
requesting?

7.

Would you consider cake decorating an art and a skill, why?

8.

What’s your favourite thing about decorating cakes?

9.

What’s the most anyone has ever paid for a cake to be designed?

What was it for?

10.

Do you think that designs people are asking for have been influences by
TV shows about cakes?

11.

Do you use any ingredients in cakes that might surprise people?
Cameo Cake Craft (Norma)
 We firstly filmed this interview with Norma in her

own cake decorating shop, and from this we were
able to receive a higher quality mise-en-scene and
the answers that where given where great.
However, Norma’s glasses had a reflection in the
lenses which comprised the quality of the overall
shot.
 On our requested second attempt we asked if the
glasses could be taken away, to which Norma agreed
as they weren't a necessity, this enabled us to gain a
better shot.
 This interview was successful the second time as the
answers given where relevant and good, the framing
was correct and the mise-en-scene was great.
Cutaways...
 Whilst we where interviewing Norma at

Cameo Cake Craft we asked for permission to
film the cakes that she had displayed around
the shop.
 This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for
the answers that we had listened to during
the interview, so this would correctly aid want
Norma was talking about .
Becky Elliot (Dietary
Requirements)
How long have not been able to have wheat?
How has this affected your diet?
Are there specific cakes made for your wheat allergy?
Have you seen more variety in the cakes that are specifically
made for allergies?
5. Do you think specialised dietary cakes have become more
accessible over recent years?
6. In your opinion do cakes made without wheat taste different to
cakes with wheat?
7. On celebrations such as birthdays, what do you have as a
substitute for cake?
8. Where do you buy your cakes, if you have them?
9. Do you bake your own cakes? If so what do you bake?
10. Do you find that a lot of bakers don’t cater for your allergy?
11. Does this allergy make it more challenging to do out socially?
1.
2.
3.
4.
Becky Elliot (Dietary
Requirements)
 We filmed Becky Elliot in her working

environment as this was the only available
location. This compromised the overall miseen-scene, but to correct this we made sure
relevant cutaways where filmed to add along.
 The answers that where given are mostly
usable, as in some answers the questions
wasn't always clear in the answer. Other than
this the framing was good and the interview
was usable.
Marge Magee (Diabetic)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Where cakes a big part of your childhood?
When did you first found out you were diabetic?
Did you eat allot of cakes before you became diabetic?
Are you able to eat cakes? If yes what do you have to do in
order to do this?
(If yes to 3) Do you choose to eat cakes? Why?
Does not eating cakes change the way you celebrate for
e.g. birthdays?
If you could eat as many cakes as you could for one day
what would you have?
When your children were growing up would you be okay
with them eating cake?
Marge Magee (Diabetic)
 We filmed Marge Magee at her home, as we
wanted her in a natural home environment as
she couldn’t be around cakes talking about why
Marge couldn't eat cakes as this would
contradict her topic.
 The only issue that had risen was that the
lighting was slightly too dark, but it was
commented that it gave it a ‘homely’ feel which

would benefit the interview as long as there was
relevant cutaways to aid the interviews topic.
 The answers that where given are good and the
framing was correct and the interview was
usable.
Cutaways...
 To help improve this section of the

documentary where dietary requirements
were disused, we asked ‘Sainsbury’s’ if we
could film their “Free Form” range as it
featured products such as: gluten free, wheat
free and sugar free.
Dodgshon’s Bakery
Tell us about the bakery
How long have you been baking for?
Why do you enjoy baking cakes?
What’s your favourite cake?
Do you make any regional cakes? If yes, which ones?
Do you make a variety of fresh cakes? If yes, which ones?
What are your most popular cakes?
Has baking methods changed from how they used to be
made to now?
9. Do you cater for people with specific allergies?
10. What happens to cakes you don’t sell at the end of each
day?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Dodgshon’s Bakery
 We filmed inside the bakery and interviewed the

owner Ian. We firstly filmed him upstairs where the
office was located, as it was busy in the shop, and
the answers he gave where great. However, once we
watched the interview back we realised that the
mise-en-scene was poor and didn't reflect the
documentary.
 We then returned to Dodgshon’s to interview
Ian, but during this second time we requested to film
downstairs next to the cakes.
 This interview was successful the second time as the
answers given where relevant and good, the framing
was correct and the mise-en-scene looked good.
Cutaways...
 Whilst we where interviewing Ian at Dodgshon’s
we asked for permission to film the cakes that
where displayed around the bakery.
 This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for the
answers that we had listened to during the
interview, so this would correctly aid want Ian
was talking about .
 When we watched the interview back we
realised that more cutaways where needed so
we asked if we return to film more footage. This

time we also asked a customers permission to
film them being served.
Morrison’s Bakery,
West Kirby
1.

How long have you been working in the bakery?

2.

What got you interested in baking in the first place?

3.

How many of your cakes our freshly baked each day?

4.

What are your best-selling cakes?

5.

Has the recent trends in the cake industry made a change to the way you bake?

6.

Do you sell any regional cakes? Will a region specifically cater for cakes from
their region more than others?

7.

Has the way you sell cakes changed in recent years due to trends?

8.

Due to more bakeries opening now does this affect the number of cakes you
sell?

9.

Due to recent trends would you say the way in which you decorate your cakes
change?

10.

Do you sell any holiday novelty cakes? How popular are these nowadays?

11.

Do you make any cupcakes if so which ones?

12.

Do you agree that cupcakes are more popular now?
Morrison’s Bakery,
West Kirby
 When we filmed Morrison’s we where able to have the

interview in the workplace, which helped to benefit the
mise-en-scene. The answers that where received
where not always clear in terms of knowing the topic
of discussion, but ones that where are usable.
 When we finished filming it was noticed that the
framing of the interview had a slight tilt. We
discovered that this was salvageable and could be
corrected later on.
 This interview was successful the second time as the
usable answers that where given where relevant and
good, the framing can be corrected during the editing
process and the mise-en-scene looked good.
Cutaways...
 After we had finished interviewing the baker

at Morrison’s we asked the store manager for
permission to film the cakes that where
available in store.
 This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for
the answers that we had listened to during
the interview, so this would correctly aid want
was being talked about.
Amy’s Cupcake Van
What first got you into baking?
Where did the idea of a cupcake van come from?
Tell us a bit about what you sell in the van?
Would you say we are in the middle of a cupcake craze?
Do you do any seasonal cakes or novelty cakes? Tell us
about them
6. Would you say nowadays people ask for personalised
cakes rather than a typical birthday cake?
7. What’s the most memorable cake you have ever made?
8. What’s your most popular cupcake?
9. Where does your inspiration come from?
10. Do you consider baking cakes an art or a skill?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Amy’s Cupcake Van
 This interview took place in Amy’s cupcake
van- this helped maintain the relevant miseen-scene. As Amy was interviewed inside of
her van with the camera on the outside as

this meant that Amy couldn't be positioned
on a conventional slight angle- but as she was
standing in the van it worked.
 This interview was successful the first time as
the answers given where relevant and
good, the framing was correct and the miseen-scene looked relevant to the topic.
Cutaways...
 Whilst we where interviewing Amy we asked

for permission to film her van that we had
interviewed her in including the prices of the
cakes that Amy sold.
 This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for
the answers that we had listened to during
the interview, so this would correctly aid want
Amy was talking about .
Vanessa Green
What is it you like about baking?
What first got you baking?
Who do you make cakes for?
Do you make any seasonal novelty cakes? Tell us about
them?
5. Have you made wedding cakes before?
6. Would you say wedding cakes have become more modern
nowadays?
7. What’s the most memorable cake you have made?
8. Would you say we are in the middle of a cupcake craze?
9. Do you make any cupcakes?
10. What would you say cake decorating and baking is? E.g.
hobby or art?
1.
2.
3.
4.
Vanessa Green
 Vanessa bakes cakes as a hobby and in order to convey

this we requested to film her inside of her kitchen, where
all her baking equipment was on show.
 The first time we filmed Vanessa the given answers and
the lighting where great. However, the framing wasn’t at
am acceptable standard as the camera was on a higher
angle than the level at which she was sitting.
 The second time filming we interviewed Vanessa in the
same location as we had previously. We improved the
framing of the shot by having her standing to ensure the
camera was at eye-level.
 This interview was successful the second time as the
answers given where relevant and good, the framing was
now correct and the mise-en-scene looked good and
relevant to Vanessa and what she was talking about.
Vox Pops
Questions asked:
1. What's your favourite cake?
2. What's your most memorable cake?
3. How often do you eat cake?
At first we tried to film Vox Pops outside a café in New
Brighton, however due to poor weather conditions we had to stop
filming.
Secondly, we chose to film our Vox Pops along a street that had
various coffee shops that sold cake. The filming took place out side
a café, of which we received permission to do so, in order to have
relevant mise-en-scene. We framed our interviewees in a mid-shot
and we tried to position them on either the left or right hand side.
Due to the street location we had little control over traffic noise
and the movement of interviewees.

Did you always know you wanted a career to do with cooking/baking? What do you believe is different about British cakes and cakes from other cultures? What tips would you give people if they were going to start baking for the first time?
  • 3. Cooking teacher (After school classes)  For this interview we filmed at the cake decorating classes. We filmed the teacher at this location in order to maintain natural mise-en-scene.  This interview was a success, but we will not be using this interview in our documentary due to the similarity with another interview.
  • 4. Cutaways...  Whilst we where interviewing the after school cooking teacher we asked for permission from the students before hand to film them decorating their cakes.  This helped us to gain relevant cutaways for the answers that where given from this interview.
  • 5. Cooking Teachers 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. How long have you been teaching food technology? Do you bake cakes outside of school?  If so what type of cakes do you make? Do you think young students enjoy baking cakes more than other foods? Are there more types of cakes being baked in school compared to a couple of years ago? Do you teach students to bake a wide variety of cakes from different cultures?  If so what cultures do you teach the most of? Given the increased awareness of cake baking thanks to programmes like the ‘Great British Bake off’ and ‘The Cake Boss’, do you think we will see more time spent on cooking/baking lessons in school? Do you think students see cake baking as an older person’s activity rather than something quite trendy?
  • 6. Cooking Teacher  For this interview we interviewed Mrs O’Hea after lesson time in her classroom in order to maintain natural mise-en-scene then we where able to add baked cakes into the background to keep it related to the topic.  This interview was successful the first time as the answers given where relevant and good, the framing was correct and the miseen-scene was good.

  • 26. Vox Pops Questions asked: 1. What's your favourite cake? 2. What's your most memorable cake? 3. How often do you eat cake? At first we tried to film Vox Pops outside a café in New Brighton, however due to poor weather conditions we had to stop filming. Secondly, we chose to film our Vox Pops along a street that had various coffee shops that sold cake. The filming took place out side a café, of which we received permission to do so, in order to have relevant mise-en-scene. We framed our interviewees in a mid-shot and we tried to position them on either the left or right hand side. Due to the street location we had little control over traffic noise and the movement of interviewees.
