1. TASK 3 RESEARCH: BACKGROUND ON
MY CHOSEN COVERS
Ashlee-Rose Brisley
2. RESEARCH: THE GENERAL
MAGAZINE CONCEPT
My 5 magazines I have chosen are TeenVogue, CosmoGirl, Seventeen, ELLEGirl and
DOLLY.
For each magazine I shall analyse a specific cover feature(s) that answer the question: ‘To
what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the
represntations they offer?’
For TeenVogue I shall be looking at the largest cover line (body issue) and the number/puff
design (male attarction)
For CosmoGirl I shall be looking at the cover line theme and the main image.
For Seventeen I shall be looking at the cover lines are worded to promote a girlie image.
Linking to my previous cover examples.
For ELLEGirl I shall be looking at how the cover lines and main image give an idea of
money and what we should spend our time doing/being.
For DOLLY I shall be looking at how males are represented from the main image and cover
lines, linking to the previous magazine examples.
The 5 covers I have picked all have the ideology of how girls should look, spend
time/money and how they should behave (especially in make company).
3. ‘Teen Vogue’ is a US magazine version
of ‘Vogue’ for teenage girls. It mainly
focuses on fashion and celebrities,
however it does offer information
about the latest entertainment and
feature stories on current
events/issues.
The magazine follows the basic tenets
of teen magazines, although with a
more glossy view which fits with the
template of the Vogue style. The
magazine also features more serious
topics such as discussions about teen
pregnancy.

4. ‘CosmoGirl’ was an American spin-off of ‘Cosmopolitan’
magazine based in New York City, published from 1999
until 2008. It targeted teenage girls featuring fashion and
celebrities.
Each issue had: an interview & photo shoot with a
current celebrity, a beauty section featuring hair, skin,
and makeup tips and trends, a fashion section
highlighting various spreads of trends and clothes, and
the Stars section which included articles on celebrities
other than those featured on the cover. March 2008
introduced a section named JSYK (Just So You Know),
which had advice and stories of how readers fell in love,
and a shocking real life story. There were also
embarrassing stories, and a manga comic featuring a
character called ‘CG’. The end Body & Soul section
covered sexual health, mental health, nutrition and
fitness.

5. ‘Seventeen’ was the first teen magazine established in
the US for young girls and women from the ages of
12–19. It began as a publication geared towards
inspiring teen girls to become role models in work and
citizenship. Soon after its debut, ‘Seventeen’ took a
more fashion and romance-oriented approach in
presenting their material, while still maintaining their
model of promoting self-confidence in young women.
It was first published in September 1944.
The magazine is organized into the following sections:
fashion, beauty, health, love, and life. There are also
aspects of the magazine that appear in each issue, such
as the "Letter from the Editor" section, Horoscope,
"Traumarama," "What You Think!" and a "Freebies"
section.

6. ‘Elle Girl’ was the largest older-teen fashion and
beauty magazine brand in the world with 12
editions and supplements worldwide. Launched in
August 2001, it was the younger sibling to ‘Elle’
magazine, and similarly focused on beauty, health,
entertainment and looked at daring fashion—its
slogan: "Dare to be different".
Its staffers were informed in early April 2006 that
Elle Girl (USA)'s last issue would be its June/July
2006 Summer Issue, while they were already in the
middle of working on the August 2006 issue, which
is traditionally the largest issue of the year—
covering fall fashion and back-to-school topics. The
company intends to continue updating the
ellegirl.com website and create new media in
conjunction with Alloy.com. The British edition of
Elle Girl magazine had been closed for business
shortly before the American magazine was.

The magazine is aimed at older teenage girls
(13-17 years) and covers celebrity news and
gossip, fashion & beauty and various feature
articles attractive to female teenagers and
