Easing the transition to NFPA 805
Thursday 5 november, 2009
Led by: Mark henry Salley, Chief fire research Branch,
US nUCLeAr regULATOrY COMMiSSiOn

About the workshop:
The NFPA Standard 805, Performance-Based Standard for Fire
Protection for Light Water Reactor Electric Generating Plants, is a
voluntary approach to demonstrate fire protection compliance. In
order to achieve this, you must be able to demonstrate your expertise
in risk informed analysis and have a full understanding of the
process involved.
This workshop has been specifically designed for the nuclear
industry and will focus on overcoming the challenges of making the
move to NFPA 805 and complying with the regulation. Our expert
workshop leader will take you through the latest research and
analysis conducted by the pilot plants as well as the future of NFPA
805, including changing predictions, and the rate of adoption both
nationally and internationally.

 Workshop agenda:
 10:00 Coffee and registration

10:30 Hearing from the pilot power plants on the progress
of implementation to reveal emerging challenges and
clarity on the benefits of the process
      ● Revealing the progress from the pilot plants on meeting
NFPA 805 against the predicted time scales
      ● Developing an implementation strategy and assembling a
team with the right skills – identifying the skill set
      ● Engaging employees for full by in on NFPA 805 to ease
          and aid the transition
      ● Revealing the cost and magnitude of modifications required
to meet NFPA 805 – what modifications are required and
          how much do they cost
      ● Assessing the methodology of conducting a Fire PRA for
NFPA 805, including procedures, timescales and safe
          shutdown strategy
      ● Reviewing the latest monitoring technologies and strategies
          for accurate forward planning

 11:30 Refreshments

12:00 Evaluating the future of NFPA 805 – how will it be
enforced and what changes will be made to the
       regulations
      ● An industry review of NFPA 805 – how are the requirements
          to comply developing and changing
      ● Is the transition to NFPA 805 inevitable for all nuclear plants? How
do the NRC plan to take this regulation forward in to the future
      ● Evaluating the international application and adoption of NFPA
805 – is this being adopted, if not what other strategies are
          being used?
      ● Highlighting the latest research on fire ignition frequencies
and risk numbers – are the results still conservative and if so
what is the impact on the industry
      ● Developing strategies to comply with regulation when risk
numbers are still conservative and unrealistic

 13:00 Close of workshop
