What’s Wrong with Visualization

The current state-of-the-market for visual
collaboration falls short in several areas:
 Undue focus on 3D above all else
 Fragmented support for different data types
 Reliance on proprietary formats and de-facto standards
 Can view and markup, but can’t re-format and re-combine
content for downstream use
 Markup is mostly demo-ware
 Social, collaborative capabilities with no product linkage

Aras Secure Social
 New Aras Secure Social strategy
 These capabilities are designed to enable
social capabilities throughout the platform
in a PLM-centric way
 This has wide application within
Aras Innovator:
 Discussions
 Forums
 Markup
 Tagging
 Instant messaging, history, notification, etc.

Secure Social Markup
 Graphical file markup is part of Secure Social threaded discussions
in an intuitive and consistent way
 Create functions for markup graphics (circle, bubble, text, etc.) provided within the
visual collaboration application
 If a comment is made that references content in the visual collaboration application, the
comment record remembers the view state of the file being viewed
 When a user views a previously-made comment containing graphical markup, the visual
collaboration application opens with the file and markup displayed
 Context of the markup is stored (Item-specific, Change-specific, etc.)
 Ability to create or view comments (and markups) is controlled by security privileges

 Advanced View & Analysis requires tight
integration between metadata and graphics:
 Display metadata of selected component
 Color-coding based on state
 Graphical file compare
 Volumetric search
 Combine multiple data types together, and store
the result back to Aras as re-authored content

 The emergence of 3D PDF and its constituent PRC format makes PDF
very compelling for complete management of product definition data
 PDF is also an excellent multi-content format, which facilitates the
use case of Work Package Generation, or “derived content creation”

What is 3D PDF?
 The term 3D PDF refers to the ability of the PDF format to
accommodate 3D data in the form of Universal 3D (U3D)
data or Product Representation Compact (PRC) data within
the PDF container
 Any PDF file containing 3D data generated in this format
according to the specifications can be read by any currently
supported version of the Acrobat Reader, with full fidelity
 3D PDF was defined and developed and continues to be
supported by Adobe
 3D PDF is an active part of the existing PDF standardization
activities


3D PDF and PRC
 PRC is one of the constituent 3D
formats for PDF, and is itself a
pending ISO standard format
 Compact, high-performance 3D
format
 Supports both tessellated and
precise representation
 Supports product structure
representation
 Supports Product Manufacturing
Information (PMI) including GD&T
 PRC can be maintained as single
files (monolithic) or hierarchical
(shattered)
 PRC files can be viewed directly, or
imbedded in PDF
