AoC London Region meeting about safer learning, anti-violence
initiatives in London
Since the publication some 18 months ago of AoCLR’s document Tackling and Preventing
Gang Problems in London Colleges, we have sought to maintain the momentum on this
important issue. We co-hosted with LSIS a seminar in October 2009 at Sir George Monoux
College at which David Lammy MP and Mayoral Adviser Pam Chesters were keynote
speakers. We have participated in workshops run by the GLA and involving the
Metropolitan Police, the Youth Justice Board, the London Serious Youth Violence Board,
Government Office for London and London Councils. We have just been invited to attend
another workshop event being run on 1 November by the Metropolitan Police as part of the
development of an anti-violence strategy where the outcome is likely to be the creation of a
Pan London Anti Violence Board that reports to the London Crime Reduction Board. The
aim of the Anti Violence Board is to identify ways in which all the agencies concerned –
including Colleges – can benefit from better joint working, analysis and evaluation that will
assist us all to operate more effectively through the challenging financial times ahead.
Paul Head has been involved in these developments throughout and has also chaired a
national Prevent group of FE Principals. He and I would now like to invite Principals and
Vice-Principals who are interested in this issue and believe they have something to
contribute to a meeting at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London on
Monday 29 November from 10 am to 12 noon. We want to be proactive in collating
information about the contribution that London Colleges can make to this agenda to share
with the agencies involved in driving initiatives such as the Pan London Anti Violence
Board.
Please respond to AoCLondonregionevents@aoc.co.uk if you would be interested in and
able to attend the meeting.
Student Success Story of the Fortnight
Hackney Community College
18 year old Vassiliki Papadopulus is relishing the new challenges
and responsibility she faces on her Hospitality and Catering course
at Hackney Community College. Vassiliki, who lives in Hackney,
progressed successfully from the College’s New Horizon
programme - a personal and social development course for people
with learning difficulties - on to the Entry Level Hospitality and
Catering course. She is enjoying it immensely.
The bright and bubbly teenager already had a bit of kitchen
experience helping to run the Essential Café on the New Horizon
course and is delighted that she will be able to further develop her
culinary skills at a more advanced stage. She said: “I want to learn
new things and I am enjoying my new course. The teachers are very
nice and I have made a lot of new friends.”

Tutor Gillian Adamson said: “The New Horizon Course that Vassiliki attended last year laid
the foundations that enabled her to make the transition to the catering course she is now
on.” The New Horizon programme launched last year at HCC teaches vital life skills,
including literacy and numeracy to people with learning difficulties and disabilities and
prepares them for independent living.

to help would-be suppliers to understand their expectations.
