2. Biography
● Ferdinand Magellan (Sabrosa, North Region,
Portugal, Spring 1480 - Mactan, Philippines,
April 27, 1521) was a Portuguese explorer.
● Serving the King of Spain, discovered what is
now called the Strait of Magellan, the first
European to pass from the Atlantic Ocean to
the Pacific Ocean, previously called South Sea.
He began the expedition, led to his death by
Juan Sebastian Elcano, achieved the first
circumnavigation of the Earth in 1522.
3. Early years as an explorer
● In March 1505, at the age of 25, he joined the
Indian Navy.
● Magellan had a crucial role advising Sequeira
and saving Serrão. This acts earned honors
and a promotion.
● Serving the new governor, Alfonso de
Albuquerque, participated with Serrão in the
conquest of Malacca in 1511.
● Then, he participated in various battles such as
the Battle of Azamor (Morocco).
4. First circumnavigation of the Earth

6. The death of Magellan

hands of the Indians of Magellan. The Spanish Juan Sebastian
Elcano took the command.
● The crew got to Seville after 1124 days with only one of the five
ships, the 'Victoria'.
