2. SIP and VOIP
SIP also known as Session Initiation Protocol which would mean almost nothing except
for the small matter of international conferences, sales conferences, job interviews, marketing a
new products, international space station, and a few other times when it’s better to see the person
you’re talking to. The power of SIP is that it is adaptive and can match the clients systems not to
put too strong appoint on it but SIP is more organic and can interact well with other protocols.
Now consider those futuristic movies when people are sharing information or needing
someone to interact with a device they are not familiar that is the power of SIP, it gives the users
the ability to see the location that each are located without needing to physically. with o using do
those video call which had been considered futuristic is just common place now because of SIP
yet requires a strong IT personnel team the odd thing about SIP is that it is “texted based
protocol” (Nobody, 2004).
An interesting fact about SIP systems is how much this type system is utilized worldwide
from not just companies using its access to communicate with employees that need to utilize
multimedia communication but also military organizations that need vital information visually
from observers on the ground aka boots on the ground, from inspecting bunkers to nuclear
facilities that utilize robotics to see hot area.
And then we have medical facilities that use SIP type systems to not only view the status
of patients by utilizing intelligent devices so that patient can communicate via pillow speakers,
charting devices that don’t have to move with the patient yet the information is transferred as the
patient is moved no more lost charts or missing information about the patient. This also provides
surgery procedures because of remote locations where the doctor or even nurses that specialize in
3. surgical application is not on hand. The devices that I’m speaking of are not just communication
devices but they provide instrumentation systems such as heart scanners, medication monitoring
systems, and even just communication that utilizes badges that the staff normally ware.
All of this is done but using SIP trunks unlike the traditional analog system that require
the users to pay for the high cost of PBX with limited communication provided by the current
Telco with the cost of incoming phone lines, long distance cost, IT, and maintenance cost to
boot. When using the services of a SIP provider a large reduction of cost happens. Which is
when VOIP comes into the picture because sometimes, you just don’t have the need to see your
coworker give another presentation about why your pen holder should be on the left hand side of
the desk or what is the best color for the next office party.
But you may have needed to know that fax from the main office had been sent, or a client
did not receive an email about the proposal to refinish their new home. So you can receive a call
from your supplier and have that fax uploaded to your location thanks to VOIP also known as
Voice Over Internet Protocol, currently many companies have been using VOIP for some time
taking the advantages of utilizing shared lines within the PBX on LAN connections yet by using
SIP trunks the company will have substantial cost savings and communication benefits because
of the SIP systems and no more constraints due to the limited communication systems that the
Telco provides. Like the company’s internet, this provides the user with a lower phone bill at the
end of the month even with the bells and whistles the providers try to bundle into the package.
Moreover provides a stable telecommunication system for any office or home because
you don’t have to have your system rerouted to a different location if you don’t want to because
the calls can be picked up with different devices such as a cell phone. As an example the
4. company “OOMA who gives you not only unlimited free calling now only in the United States
but also at cost two phone numbers an answering system that can be access via cell phone all at
the monthly cost less than $10.00” (OOMA, n.d.).
Conclusion
SIP and VOIP systems provide not just a convenience for users it reduces time, cost and
expands how information is utilized within a company’s life cycle. Not only can a nurse or
physician read a chart from patients bed that information can be transferred to a team of doctors
or nurses miles away even a different country if the need arise.
Sharing information without the need of a tap on the shoulder or requiring a committee to
consider the cost of setting up a special phone line as it had been in the past. SIP/VOIP systems
provide a web within the relational information system which is more like information
architecture because each provides the users with detailed strategy so that deliverables can be
viewed by all parties within a short time span. Giving a more comprehensive grasp of events as
they happen and not interpretive by others that can add judgment warranted or not.
