A presentation with an interview on the serious debate of what it would take for stricter gun laws to be introduced in the US due to recent shootings and the rise in gun crime rate.
1. Gun crime is higher than ever in the US
In 2011, there were 12664 murders in the US, of
those 8583 were caused by firearms
Over 30 mass shootings in 14 years
2. The most recent one this year being the
Washington Naval Yard Shooting where a former
Navy reservist gunned down 12 people
And the most horrific shooting being the Sandy
Hook Elementary School shooting that resulted
in the deaths of 20 children and six teachers.
3. What will be the turning point for a tougher
stance on gun control in the US?
4. The Second Amendment to the United States
Constitution protects the right of individual
Americans to keep and bear arms, regardless of
the service in a militia. The right is not unlimited
and does not prohibit all regulation of firearms
and similar devices.
5. State and Local governments are limited to the
same extent as the federal government from
infringing this right. The second Amendment
was adopted on December 15, 1971, as part of
the first ten amendments comprising of the Bill
of Rights.
6. Interview with Iwan Morgan, Professor of US Studies
and Head of US programmes at the Institute of the
Americas, University College London
7. In your opinion, what would it take for
America to finally put a ban on guns or at
least enforce stricter gun laws?
