What you see is what you get The influence of Philosophical Perspectives in Integrative Research: Anna Evely, Ioan Fazey, Xavier Lambin and Michelle Pinard Universities of Aberdeen and Aberystwyth INTRODUCTION A problem can be viewed from many different perspectives (see pictures). What a problem is perceived to be influences the questions we ask, the methods we use, and the results gained. Researchers in the social sciences adopt a wide breadth of philosophical views, of which some are illustrated in Table 1. These philosophies can be visualised as a continuum from positivism–subjectivism. We tested this framework with a conservation case study which wanted to investigate the motivation of their volunteers (Table 2). AIM We explain some of the philosophical views underpinning social research and how these views influence research methods and outcomes. Positivist Subjectivist CONCLUSION Mapping the influence of philosophies enables researchers to make explicit their own implicit assumptions, as well as giving insight into what the results of research would be if different approaches were used. This approach ensures the research strategy chosen to be well considered, and the most suitable approach selected. All the pictures above can be interpreted in more than one way, depending on how you see it will influence how you might discuss the picture. Take a look at them and see if you can tell what they are? (answers below) Table 1: Some of the many different philosophies that underpin social research, presented along a positivist–subjectivist continuum. The table demonstrates how the philosophies influence research strategies and methodologies, etc. Table 2: The influence of various philosophical assumptions on research into volunteer motivation within the Cairngorms Water Vole Conservation Project. Based on Table 1’s framework. ANSWERS 1) ) Both an old woman and a young woman can be seen 2) The picture shows a landscape, looking carefully the outline of a baby is visible in the trees 3) Some people see the dancer spinning anti-clockwise, some see her spinning clockwise, a few can get the dancer to change directions and slow down or speed up P hilosophy Extreme Positivism Structural Realism Critical Realism Transcendental Realism Hermeneutics Nominalism Extreme Subjectivism Core Ontological Assumption Reality as a concrete structure Reality as a concrete process Reality as an interplay between a concrete structure and influenced by perception Reality is both a projection of human imagination and a concrete structure.
