ANNEXURE
Thesis: Microbial Degradation of Organo-Phosphorus Pesticide Waste
3. • The work involved the development of a biological method for the detoxification of a pesticide intermediate sludge, generated
during the manufacture of O, O – diethyl thio phosphoryl chloride (DTCI). DTCI is used in the synthesis of Quinolphos, Diazinon,
Dursban and Dyfonate. Disposal of this highly acidic/ toxic material creates environmental pollution if left untreated
• A microbial system was developed for the degradation of this highly toxic compound
• The microbial treatment study clearly brought out that DTCI sludge which is highly toxic, could be effectively detoxified and
safely disposed off as landfillers without any environmental hazard
KEY PROJECTS HANDLED
• Development of Microbial based biofertilizers
• Isolation of bioactive molecules from fungus
• Development of biobased Anti-oxidants and odour control agent for petroleum based oil and lubricant industries
• Developed Microbial formulation for reduction of COD and Ammonical Nitrogen in High TDS effluents
• Developed Microbial formulations for biodegradation of:
o NitroToulene (NT)
o Di Nitro Benzene (DNB)
o Para Di Aniline (PDA)
o Nitrophenols
o Methanol
o 2,4 dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acids
o Benzyl chloride, DVA-amide, DVA Triethylamine, Tetrachloro butyric acid
o Niacinic Acid, Sodium Nicotinate and Niacin Amide
o Benzene derivatives, Formaldehyde, Ortho-Nitro-Aniline, ortho anisole, Dichloro Benzidine Dihydrochloride
o Synthetic Pyrethroids
• Bioconversion of Municipal Solid Waste to Bio – organic Manure
• Bio Conversion of Wood Chips Waste to Bio – organic Manure through delignification using lignin degrading Bacteria
• Development of Microbial System for degradation of Organic load from a mixed effluent generated in a pesticide manufacturing
unit
• Microbial Pulping of Bagasse in Paper Industry
• Development of mixed microbial system for degradation of free formaldehyde form Waste effluent
• Microbial degradation of Polymeric Tar generated during the manufacture of Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), a Rubber Chemical
• Biosorption of Chromium using Microbial System
• Microbial conversion of Hexavalent Chromium to Trivalent Chromium
• Decolorization of Dye effluent using a mixed microbial culture
• Microbial Desulphurization of Coal
• Microbial treatment of Asbestos dust
• Isolation of antifungal agent from a fungal species
• Bio-treatment of Distillery and Textile effluents
• Microbial Degradation of Lignin
o Bio degradation of Lignin is a very important renewable source of aromatic carbon and breaking the lignified tissue through
microorganisms is challenging by itself
o A mixed consortium of bacterial culture was developed and used to study the bioconversion of matchstick wastes to rich
organic manure
• Removal of Organic Load from a Mixed Effluent with Monocultures and Mixed Cultures
o The effluent from one of the industries, involved in manufacture of Agro Chemicals, had intermediate products having
cumidine, permethric acid, cypermethric acid, 2 chlorobenzene and by products like Dimethyl urea and O – Nitrocumene
o Primary treated composite effluent stream on treatment with mixed bacterial cultures showed about 62 to 66% drop in
BOD and about 43 to 56% drop in COD
• Removal of Lignin as a pre-treatment of Bagasse before Pulping
o Cellulose fibres are the most important raw material used in the manufacture of paper. Cellulose in trees is encrusted with
lignin which must be removed.; the unwanted lignin in the wood adds to the operational cost and also disposal problem
o The microbially treated bagasse showed a 70% drop in Kalson’s lignin. The pre-treatment process has a great advantage of
bringing down the cost of pulp production
• Removal of free Formaldehyde
4. o Free formaldehyde is generated in the effluent during the manufacture of phenol-formaldehyde resins. If left untreated
in effluent, free formaldehyde could lead to ecological imbalance; using the property of certain autotrophic bacteria to
metabolise free formaldehyde, a mircrobial system was developed to treat the effluent
o Reduced the presence of free fromaldehye by 85% with the use of this microbial system
• Microbial Treatment of MBT – Tar
o Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is an important Rubber chemical, it is a polymeric waste, insoluble in water, generated
during the manufacture of mercaptobenzothiazole
o The only method for disposing it so far has been the expensive incineration; with the use of microbial system a
biotreatment method was developed
o With bio – treatment, this difficult product could be converted to free flowing material, soluble in water, thus making
disposal easier
• Biosorption of Metal
o The property of microbes to absorb metals from solution was exploited and a system was developed wherein about 90%
reduction in the concentration of metal ions in the solution was achieved
o In case of chromium, the hexavalent chromium was further converted to the non-toxic trivalent chromium with the use of
selective microbes
