Cushing’s Syndrome in Dogs
1. Cushing's Syndrome in Dogs
Every dog owner or dog sitter should be aware of the various diseases that might get
the better of their pet and act accordingly. It is very important that the symptoms
are properly understood and the veterinarian is consulted well in advance before
things turn worse. The Cushing's Syndrome is one of the most commonly occurring
diseases among dogs. Let's find out about it in detail.
What is Cushing's Syndrome?
Cushing's Syndrome is also referred to as Hyperadrenocorticism. This generally
happens when there is an extreme level of a hormone called 'cortisone' in the
bloodstream of the dog. This mostly results out of a disorder in the body due to
which the metabolism procedure of the dog is affected. Likely disorders may include
gastrointestinal problems, excessive or hyper-tension, etc. Proper dog care services
should be provided to the pet right from the early stages to in order to avoid any
kind of fatality.
2. You know it's Cushing Syndrome when...
The major symptoms involved are:
The dog urinates more often
Excessive panting above normal levels
Fat layer formation around the neck area
Increased weakness in the muscles
Decreased levels in sleep
Considerable drop in levels of enthusiasm
Contracted Genitals
The prevalence of a pot-belly
Unreasonable Obesity
Periodic hair loss
The owner of the pets and dog sitters especially should be able to recognise these
symptoms in the dogs so that the proper care can be provided to the dogs from an
early stage.
Causes: Why & How does it develop?
Animals other than just dogs too can be affected by this disease. However, when it
comes to just dogs, there are two primary types that are prevalent. They are
Cushing's Syndrome (Pituitary) and Cushing's Syndrome (Adrenal). The Pituitary
Cushing's Syndrome is the more common one as it affects a high percentage of dogs.
In this case, a tumor develops in the pituitary gland in the brain causing the
Syndrome.
The Adrenal Cushing's Syndrome results out of a tumor formation on the adrenal
gland situated in the kidneys. Another cause for Hyperadrenocorticism is the excess
level of Glucocorticoid in the body. Glucocorticoid mainly helps in dealing with
infections & metabolism and acts as an alternative for dogs that are victims of low
cortisone levels. It should be seen that optimum levels of Glucocorticoid are
maintained.
How to get rid of it?
To be honest, the first level of treatment starts with the timely recognition of the
symptoms on the part of the owners or the dog sitters. Once the patient is taken to
the vet, a few test may be carried out to figure out what is actually leading to the
3. syndrome as there is no guaranteed reason available. Initial treatment will be
carried out by conducting a simple blood and/or urine test to figure out if there is
any infection. Few hormone screening tests include ACTH Stimulation and LDDS
tests. The Veterinarian has to figure out whether surgery is going to be the key form
of treatment or medicine. If the tumor spreads to other places in the body, then
surgery is not a viable option.Once the actual problem is detected, the ideal form of
diagnosis is catered to in order to relieve the dog of its misery.
