Colonel Matheson left Elkhorn and made his fortune in the East, however he never forgot his beginnings and he purchased the land where his birthplace had been located and offered the City Fathers a library building. Mr. Matheson hired a New York architect of some repute and took a personal interest in all aspects of construction, which guaranteed a building that was esthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
