2010 Volkswagen Golf Redefines the Compact Passenger Vehicle Class
Montreal, QC –––The new Volkswagen Golf, the 2009 World Car of the Year, was presented to
the Canadian automotive media today in Montreal’s hip Plateau District.
Raising the bar in the compact passenger car segment, the new Golf is part of the sixth
generation of the Golf Family being launched in Canada this month.
“The new Volkswagen Golf redefines the hatchback class we invented 35 years ago,” noted John
White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada. “We are excited to have so many
Canadian auto journalists here to test drive it, and we are confident that it will attract many
current and new customers to the brand with its compelling value.”
Starting at $20,175 in the 3-door 5-speed manual transmission Trendline version, the new 2010
Golf offers Canadian consumers the opportunity to experience German engineering at an
affordable price.
Volkswagen invented the hatchback class 35 years ago. With over 26 million units sold since, it
is Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle ever, eclipsing even the Beetle. Throughout its history here
in Canada, the Golf has alternated between two names. With this latest generation, Volkswagen

is reuniting all three members of the worldwide Golf Family together for the first time in Canada
under the same name.
After 35 years, the challenge is to constantly reinvent oneself. Yet, the new 2010 Golf is
evolutionary, sportier, and more distinctive than any previous generation. It is accentuated with
precisely defined lines and edges. From the redesigned front grille and headlamps that echo the
horizontal alignment of the first generation, to the proportioned flared surfaces and recesses
rearward, to the new taillights, a dominant curve line emerges. The side profile, or “character
line”, gives the new Golf a fuller and lower stance. This is quite an accomplishment for an
entry-level vehicle, and the 2010 Golf’s exterior and interior design raises the bar for its class.
The new 2010 Golf is available in two body styles, either as a 3-door or, optionally, as a 5-door.
Customers can choose either body style with a standard 2.5 litre 170 HP 20 valve 5-cylinder
gasoline engine that produces 170 HP and 177 lbs-ft of torque, or the optional award-winning
2.0 litre 140 HP 16 valve TDI Clean Diesel motor exclusive to the 5-door model producing a 236
lbs-ft torque from a low 1,750 RPM. The 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI Clean Diesel consumes
only 4.6 l/100 km/h on the highway when mated to a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
automatic transmission1.
All key body elements are redesigned, and the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf has a sportier
and more distinctive image. In front, the new car adopts the radiator grille of the first generation
Golf that is horizontally aligned between the headlights. The rear is characterized by a
predominance of horizontal lines. The taillights – now very wide – are marked among other
things by an unmistakably unique night design.
In raising the bar, the new Golf is quieter than ever. It is characterized by first-class acoustic
properties which include a special sound-damping film in the windshield that reduces driving
noises, as does the newly developed seal design on the doors and side window guides.
Significantly less wind noise is generated by the outside mirrors due to their new shape.
Furthermore, special modifications were made to better isolate the engine and passenger
compartments from one another acoustically.

Inside, the cabin is entirely redesigned. The surfaces follow Volkswagen’s impeccable fit and
finish in terms of touch, appearance, and layout. It includes details such as the brushed chrome
accents and round instruments with brilliant white lighting that is easier to read in all conditions,
and a new 3-spoke steering wheel inspired by the Passat CC.
Controls for the Climatic climate control and the available Premium 8 touch screen radio with 6-
disc CD changer and integrated SIRIUS satellite radio are ergonomic and intelligent. Even the
power windows with one touch up and down functions and the heated side mirror controls have
been located further forward for easier access in order to keep the driver’s eyes turned towards
the road.
The front seats hold without gripping, allowing for easy entry and exit as well as quick access to
the Media Device Interface to connect an iPod into the front centre armrest to play through the
available 8-speaker Premium 8 radio. The driver and front passengers can adjust their seats 8
different ways along with lumbar support.
Hatchbacks like the new 2010 Golf attract a very wide range of buyers, and safety remains a top
concern. Volkswagen kept this in mind when it included 6 standard airbags including Side
Curtain Protection for front and rear occupants, as well as ABS, and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) to permit smooth, comfortable starts on road surfaces
that do not offer uniform grip.
The new 2010 Volkswagen Golf is also a functional hatchback for families. Its rear cargo
capacity is supplemented by the 60 / 40 split folding rear seats with four tie-down hooks in the
fully carpeted and lined luggage compartment to help keep stuff together. A pass-through
through the rear centre armrest makes a handy place to store skis or snowboards for those
looking to keep their cargo inside the vehicle.
The new 2010 Golf is available for sale now at Volkswagen Dealers across Canada. For more
