This document summarizes Esri's partnership with Amazon to deliver the ArcGIS platform in the cloud. Some key benefits of deploying ArcGIS on Amazon Web Services include immediate infrastructure, fast deployment, scalability, and cost savings. Examples are given of how ArcGIS has been successfully deployed on AWS for disaster response, public event mapping, and a yacht tracking application. Walking with the Wounded is a unique expedition that will see wounded servicemen from the UK Armed Forces trek to the Geographical North Pole unaided. On reaching the Pole they entered the record books as the first amputees to reach this remote and hostile destination. By undertaking the expedition the team aim to raise £2million to help those whose lives have been changed irreversibly serving their country.People in the United Kingdom and elsewhere kept up with the trek via the WWTW website, with its interactive map and a blog that included the latest photos and audio from the modern-day polar explorers. The map displayed the men's location based on GPS coordinates relayed back to WWTW headquarters. Esri UK’s interactive map covered the Arctic region. It highlighted key points of interest and let visitors follow the expedition's progress in near real time.The WWTW expedition generated worldwide media attention, especially since Prince Harry lent his support by skiing part of the way with the WWTW team. To handle a potentially high number of views on the mapping application site, Esri UK decided to use ArcGIS Server running on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).Relatively few people have attempted to reach the North Pole, and tales are epic of the brave adventurers who have set this lofty goal. Recently Esri UK supported just such a historic event by creating an online interactive map, using ArcGIS Server on Amazon EC2, to track the 200-mile, 13-day, fund-raising journey for Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), a charity that exists to fund job training and recovery programs for British service members who return home from war injured or traumatized.
Let’s take an example of ArcGIS Server on EC2 supporting high-volume sitesThree quarters of the state of Queensland, Australia was declared a disaster zone as a result of flooding that began in late December 2010. Agencies responding to the disaster and residents of affected areas needed immediate access to current information on the evolving situation.To assist Brisbane City Council, Esri- Australia started gathering data and building an app. Within 12 hours, a common operational picture (COP) was hosted on the Amazon infrastructure, as available as a trusted source for emergency responders and citizens.Increasingly, we’re seeing geospatial solutions hosted in the cloud to immediately support disaster-response operations on a massive public scale.As we’ve seen with Haiti, the Gulf of Mexico, Australia and others, a situational awareness application can be up-and-running in the cloud within hours, But equally important is the confidence that cloud-hosting provides – since that application is valueless if it’s underwater or under rubble. Off-premise, cloud-based Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity is emerging as a practical necessity and, given economies of scale, economically viable than it has been in the past.
