• The Raccoon Dog looks very much like a raccoon but is
in fact a member of the dog family. It spread to France
from its native habitat of south-east Siberia, China and
Japan after being introduced to western parts of Russia
for its fur and hunting.
• The European or Mediterranean black widow spider can
pack a very nasty bite. The venom can produce
convulsions and a lowering of body temperature.
Although the bite is not often fatal to humans it can be
dangerous to the very young, elderly or those with weak
hearts.
The European Black Widow Spider can be found in the
south of France, Corsica and elsewhere along the
Mediterranean.
5. Native animals to France
• Red squirrels are a little bit smaller than the Grey
squirrel with adults weighing about 350g. Their
bodies are between 18 - 24 cm long and their bushy
tails up to 18 cm long. The Red squirrel generally has
a reddish brown fur and a cream to white belly
although their fur colour can be different colours
locally. In the winter, adults develop a large blackish
furry tufts on their ears and their fur colour can
darken.
Easily mistaken for a lizard, the Marbled Newt is very
striking. Females and young adults have an orange
stripe running down their backs while the males in the
breeding season acquire a large wavy crest along
their backs. They are closely related to the Great
crested Newt and have been known to breed with each
other creating a hybrid of the two.
