3. A WHOLE
DIFFERENT STORY
Altadonna is part of the world of today, made of
passion, knowledge about wines and the land,
sensitivity to and care for details. It is a family
enterprise in which two generations of wine
makers, Niccolò and Stefano Chioccioli, an
authoritative oenologist and agronomist of
international fame, interact and collaborate with
the precise aim of producing wines that best
represent the typical characteristics of the
grapes and the terroir. That's how the line of
wines named Altadonna was born...
affectionately inspired by the surname of Anna,
wife and mother of the two makers.
4. A NETWORK OF QUALITY
From direct, constant collaboration with several
Italian winegrowers, accurately selected on the
basis of the region and specific environmental
characteristics in which they work, has led to
the creation of a network of producers whose
fundamental point of contact is respect for the
terroir. The agronomical instructions given by
Altadonna are rigorously respected for the
cultivation of the vineyards. Altadonna follows
the development of the vines at every step,
accompanying the grapes to perfect maturation.
The management continues in the cantina in
order to sensitively interpret the qualitative
elements of the grapes and obtain a wine that is
harmonious and balanced, an authentic
expression of its terroir. Tuscany, Lombardy,
the Veneto and Sicily are the territories
involved in the Altadonna project, brilliantly
uniting typicality and quality.
5. THE SEARCH
FOR EXCELLENCE
Thorough knowledge of vineyards and
meticulous attention in the cantina make it
possible to obtain wines that achieve the
highest possible quality of their terroir, without
sacrificing respect for nature. Altadonna wines
are born of this, with fresh, fruity tones, where
quality and identity are appreciated in the
details.
6. THE CERTAINTY
OF THE RESULTS
The innovative strategy of the Altadonna
project, together with the valuable consulting of
Stefano Chioccioli and the constant presence of
his son, Niccolò, in the company during the
entire productive process, are guarantees of the
excellence of the results, expressed in wines of
great harmony and elegance.
7. UNITED BY
A GREAT PASSION
A truly sincere love for the land and its fruits,
joined with a profound respect for nature and
its seasons. Passion for making things and
dedication to realising them in the best way
possible. These are the values that our family
embraces, and which are reflected every day in
the Altadonna project.
8. THE RIGOUR
OF KNOWLEDGE
Stefano Chioccioli, an authoritative oenologist
and agronomist of international renown, has
worked with the most prestigious companies for
more than 25 years. His wines have been
awarded numerous prizes and recognitions,
including more than 70 "Tre Bicchieri" (Three
glasses, the maximum rating) in the Gambero
Rosso guide to wines, and countless point
scores of 92+ in magazines about wine such as
Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Wine
Advocate and Decanter, finally arriving at being
given 100/100 by both Robert Parker and Wine
Spectator. He is a member of numerous
organisations dedicated to vine-growing and
oenology, and serves on various tasting
commissions. For some years now he has
provided consultation to Altadonna, for which,
together with his son Niccolò, he created the
well-known Collezione of single varietal wines
and the prestigious DOCG line.
9. FOLLOWING
HIS FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS
IN HIS HOMELAND
Niccolò, the second generation of oenologists in
the Chioccioli family, carries the family's
passion for great oenology forward. With a
degree from the same university as his father,
he also inherited his knowledge and sensitivity.
"It was my father who stimulated my curiosity
and encouraged me to taste and distinguish
between the multitude of aromas and perfumes
of Italian grapes, to recognize the qualities and
defects of each wine. He taught me the
necessary elements for understanding and
making a great wine... structure, character, a
precise identity, balance and elegance". Niccolò
Chioccioli, today at the helm of Altadonna,
manages all the activities of the Tuscan office,
and personally oversees the winemaking
productions in other locations, from the growing
of the vines to the bottling.
10. THE POWER OF A SMILE
Anna Altadonna, cheerful and positive, besides
lending her name to the company, also
embodies its most heartfelt spirit. As sincere as
the wines created by her husband Stefano
Chioccioli, Anna plays a fundamental role as a
go-between for the company and its clients,
understanding their needs in order to guarantee
a service in keeping with the high quality of the
product and its image: "Respect for tradition
and attention to the market has guided us to
the creation of a company image that is simple
and refined, an apt reflection of who we are".
11. WINE PASSIONATE!
A brilliant university student in the Faculty of
Law, a Sommelier and genuine connoisseur,
Enrico Chioccioli manages to combine study and
work thanks to the great passion for wine that
he shares with his family. He takes an active
part in the Altadonna project, collaborating with
his older brother Niccolò in analysing foreign
markets and developing commercial ties with
them. Enrico, filled with enthusiasm, is the
perfect embodiment of authentic vitality and
freshness that only a company like Altadonna
can offer.
12. A VINEYARD NAMED ITALY
Vineyards have grown spontaneously in Italy for
thousands of centuries (archaeological finds
testify to their presence as early as 300,000
years ago). Beginning in the eighth century
B.C., numerous documents attest to the
existence of wine in Southern Italy, but also in
the Veneto, Tuscany, Lazio, Sicily and Sardinia.
We know that the Etruscans, around the fifth
century B.C., introduced new techniques for
growing grapes and making wine, but it was the
expansion of Rome that gave a strong impetus
to the spread of vineyards throughout the
peninsula and the whole Roman Empire. In
Italy, historic situations combined perfectly with
environmental conditions, where a great variety
of geological, topographical and microclimatic
characteristics gave birth to multiple terroirs in
which each variety of grape expresses its own
particular character. The abundance of
autochthonous varietals (about 350), the
spread of those to all regions (the only country
in the world to feature this), the range of
oenological types (almost 400 denominations of
origin) and the quantity of wine produced (the
number one producer in the world) make Italy
the point of reference for quality winemaking.
Welcome to Vigna Italia.
13. THE GREAT
TUSCAN TRADITION
Tuscan wines date back to the fifth century
before Christ and to the Etruscan period, when
the inhabitants of the region already enjoyed
mixed agriculture. The more recent concepts of
innovative winegrowing and great wines took
hold in the 1960s. Tuscany, with its variegated
terrain, its rolling hills, sunflowers and cypress
trees, features a multitude of microclimates. In
the southern part a Mediterranean climate
dominates, while the north, with dry summers
and cold winters, is more continental. The
variety of terrains, most composed of clay and
gypsum, also includes those that are
calcareous, rich in minerals. The native vines,
such as Sangiovese and Vermentino, provide
the primary grapes of this region. Without a
doubt this is the territory that provides some of
the most prestigious wines of the peninsula.
14. SICILY, A LAND
OF BOLD CHARACTER
Sicily is an ancient, culturally rich island, whose
history dates back 6,000 years. Since the time
of the Sicels, the original inhabitants for whom
the island is named, the successive waves of
Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Normans and
Spanish settlers contributed to giving this land
a strong character. However, it was the Spanish
who introduced irrigation, the cultivation of
olives, fruits and vineyards, thus giving life to
an abundant production. This land, rich in
intense colours, from the blue of the sea to the
red of Pachino tomatoes, is filled with the
perfumes of orange and lemon groves, and is
characterised by an abundance of almonds,
grapes and olives. The hot and dry climate
becomes milder at higher elevations. The land
is mainly hilly, except for a small area of planes.
The mountainous part, which includes Mount
Etna with its volcanic land, is mainly
concentrated in the north-eastern part of the
island. The land, fertile, rich in minerals, rather
sandy and red and black in colour, is mixed
here and there with calcareous stone. The
Sicilian sunshine does not stress the grapes, but
helps them reach perfect maturation. The
African winds and the constant Mediterranean
breezes produce perfect grapes. Sicily’s
autochthonous varieties are the Grillo and Nero
d'Avola. The Syrah variety has its highest
expression just here.
15. THREE VENICES:
THE WHITES THAT
MAKE HISTORY
The term Tre Venezie, "Three Venices", refers to
a vast area situated in north-eastern Italy,
comprising the three regions of Friuli Venezia
Giulia, the Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige. All
of these have in common a hilly landscape, with
mountainous areas, rivers and valleys. The
Three Venices are protected from the cold winds
from north of the Alps and enjoy the warm
currents of the Adriatic Sea. The population,
originally Etruscan, was later taken over by the
Roman Empire and later still by the Austro-
Hungarians. It was the Augustinian Monks who,
during the Middle Ages, produced the first
system of winegrowing and making. Today, the
Three Venices, home of the most prestigious
schools for oenology, are one of the wealthiest
areas in Italy and a leader in the production of
high-quality white wines, with fermentation at
controlled temperatures, the use of selected
yeasts and a new approach to the density of
vines planted in the vineyards. Pinot Grigio and
Prosecco of Valdobbiadene are the highest
expressions of winemaking in this area.
16. SURPRISING LOMBARDY
Lombardy refers to the part of north central
Italy whose delineation goes back to the
Etruscan age. Already at the time of the
Romans the areas of the Valtellina and Lake
Garda were famous for their wines. The
province of Pavia is located in the southern
part, just below Milan, and its winegrowing was
subject to a strong Greek influence. Today Pavia
counts among its production one of the best
Italian Pino Nero wines. The terrain is well
drained, rich in gypsum and limestone. Careful
management of the harvest results in a refined
elegant Pinot Nero.
