What American Families are Eating and Cooking
April 2010
Allrecipes Environmental Survey shows people don’t
just get grayer as they get older…they get greener too!
Surprising survey results show 52% of people 46 and older are concerned about
the environment, while only 42% ages 35 and younger feel the same way. Below
are a few more ways that age affects “green” behaviors.
• The likelihood to purchase environmentally-friendly products increases with age. Only one-third of cooks ages
18 to 24 make an effort to purchase environmentally-friendly products, whereas more than half of cooks 46
and older make an effort to purchase environmentally-friendly products.
• Top environmentally-friendly tactics employed by families include reusing (87%) and recycling (85%)
containers; using energy-efficient light bulbs (86%, up 15% from last year); and purchasing energy-efficient
appliances (70%). Least likely tactics include composting (40%, this is up 10% from last year) and rain barrels
(9.5%).
• More than half of home cooks have a garden to grow food; the most common methods are a garden plot in
the yard and containers. Younger cooks are twice as likely to be growing in containers compared with their
older counterparts.
• Younger cooks are 2 to 3 times more likely to shop at farmers’ markets for environmentally-friendly reasons
compared with their older counterparts. (See chart below)
FUN FACT
According to the Global Industry Guide, organic food has grown into a $52 billion market and represents the fastest-
growing segment of the grocery industry. On Allrecipes, searches for the term “organic” have grown at six times the
yearly average compared to other terms. Younger cooks say they are willing to pay more for organic products,
though on average, they buy less of them.

2. April Trends: April is Greener than
March with Asparagus and Earth Day
Searches for the term asparagus are highest in April when it
ranks #14 among the top 50 search terms (the rest of the year,
it’s far below 50).
On Allrecipes, searches for asparagus have grown at 7 times
the yearly average compared to other search terms.
FUN FACT
Allrecipes home cooks will prepare
enough asparagus this year, that if laid
end-to-end, it would reach from Seattle
to Miami (that’s 3,300 miles!).

40th Anniversary of Earth Day
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Loss Project, Americans throw away more than 25.9
million tons of all the food produced for domestic sale and consumption per year.
FUN FACT
The amount of greenhouse gases (217.56 billion pounds) created by food waste in the U.S. would be equivalent to
every person in California driving to Maine and back. (That’s about 37 million people driving about 6,000 miles.)
