Notas do Editor

  1. Hello and welcome to the Online Baccalaureate Web Information Session. We are very pleased that you are interested in the School of Professional Studies Online Degree Program. This video will provide you with an overview of our School and the majors that we offer.
  2. The CUNY system is the largest urban public university in the US, with 250,000 degree seeking students, totally 450,000+ (this includes students pursuing certificates and taking continue education courses) CUNY has international reputation for access and excellence. School of Professional Studies OR SPS is the newest and one of the most rapidly growing branches of CUNY. We opened our doors in 2003 to meet the needs of working adults that wanted to return to school. The Online BA program is rapidly growing, but even with the expansion of majors we continue to focus on student success. At SPS you will receive individual attention from dedicated staff, who will provide guidance every step of the way until you earn your diploma. The CUNY School of Professional Studies is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Associations of Colleges and Schools since 1961, last reaffirmed in 2010. See http://sps.cuny.edu/pdf/accreditation.pdf .
  3. There are many reasons students choose to complete their degree online. Taking courses online gives students the opportunity to gain professional skills and knowledge needed for career advancement in a convenient learning environment. Unlike traditional classroom-based courses, online courses offer you flexibility in scheduling and an opportunity to learn at home, at work or at any computer with internet access. On average, students pursuing the program are in their mid to late 30’s. However, the age of our students ranges from 19 to 72 years old. You will study with a diverse population of students coming from all paths of life. You will meet students probably just like you, busy working professionals without enough time to attend class in a traditional setting, people who like to learn new skills in order to change careers or advance within their fields, people who recently became unemployed, stay at home parents and retirees. Everyone who begins their journey at SPS has a unique story and many reasons for completing their degree. We hope that our program sparks your desire for life long learning and constant personal growth and development.
  4. The ONLINE BA program is a completers program. Students only take classes they need to complete their degree. So what is required to be successful as an online student? Students who do well in the program have excellent time management and organizational skills, commitment and self-discipline, and inquisitive nature, and support of those around them. You will be encouraged to take charge of your own learning and ask lots of questions. Students who have successfully completed their degrees have gone on to better jobs, graduate school and continued taking courses for professional certifications.
  5. As a student in the program you have a tremendous support system behind you. From the time you apply to the program an advisor will be assigned to you and guide you along all the steps from admission to graduation. Your advisor will help you map out your academic progress and help you select your courses Tutoring is available in quantitative subjects, research and writing. Students are encouraged by their faculty members to seek out help if they are unfamiliar or struggling with a topic. You will also have access to the CUNY’S Baruch’s Library, a dedicated librarian 24/7. Each student at SPS gets a physical ID card mailed to them. The ID in turn allows you to visit any CUNY library Students experiencing technical problems are able to contact Helpdesk for technical support or blackboard issues. You will also have access to the SPS Career services, available from the day one SPS, for resume creation, job search strategies, networking connections, and many informative webinars and seminars
  6. Our experienced and supportive faculty SPS are passionate about their subject fields, love to teach and are devoted to student success. Some of our instructors stem from other branches of CUNY, and some are leaders and specialists within their fields.   All faculty members undergo extensive training to teach online, and understand the busy lives that students at SPS lead.
  7. The minimum admissions requirements are: Minimum 24 credits from an accredited institution (college or university) – The maximum number of credits student can transfer in is 90 Overall GPA of 2.5 A strong personal statement that reflects your goals, career aspirations, familiarity with the online environment and demonstrates your writing ability. Please feel free to explain your past academic experiences, future goals and reasons why you decided to enroll in the Online Degree. Your personal statement is your opportunity to explain your specific situation to the admissions committee. A good essay is anywhere between 250 to 500 words. The admissions committee takes the time to read each personal statement in detail and get to know each applicant before making an admissions decision. After you have submitted your application you will be required to submit transcripts from all schools previously attended, including CUNY Schools Your t ransfer credits will be evaluated soon after admission decision. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis - there is no specific date on which all decisions are made. If you do not meet the requirements or have i ndividual questions please contact with office of Admissions and Academic Advising at 212-652-2869 or http://online.sps.cuny.edu/admissions/ -- Embedded Link
  8. You can attend the program Full time or Part time. The cost of attendance and fees vary, depending on the number of credits you take each semester. You can apply for Financial Aid by filling out the free FAFSA application online. When applying please note the school codes (Highlight) The Tuition will increase $300/year for the next 5 years. 9.   The online courses at SPS are very similar to those you would take in a traditional classroom… but they are online.   We follow a regular 16 week semester schedule for Fall and Spring , with a 10 week condensed summer session.   There isn’t a specific time that you will need to be online, but we encourage you to log in at least 3-4 times a week. To be successful in the program you will need to devote about 9-12 hours per class per week. Students who work full time usually commit to 1 or 2 classes in their first semester.   Link to Video: http://sps.cuny.edu/student_resources/online_learning.html
  10. There are many Benefits of Online Learning:   You can log in to your class from anywhere, at any time (asynchronous). Many of our students travel for work and are still able to complete their assignments on the road. You can listen to lectures as many times as desired, and all lecture materials are available on the web   The courses themselves are highly interactive, participatory, and are based on a collaborative learning model. You will participate in discussion boards, work on group and individual assignments, take quizzes and tests online, and learn many new skills and technologies. Students in the online classrooms get to know their instructors well. Online courses require a lot of dedication on the part of all participants, they are flexible and convenient… but keep in mind they are not easier
  11. Courses are structured around weekly units, with assignments and readings due every week. In each class you will study with an instructor and another 15 to 25 students. The small classroom format allows for more discussion, a strong emphasis of writing assignments, utilization of new technologies, and research – all of which result in a deeper understanding of the topics. Students in the online program experience a different type of learning, by finding resources, asking questions, solving issues with other students and being proactive about their learning experience. .
  12. There are certain expectations set by each instructor, and not all courses follow the same format. The skills you learn will make you more marketable in the current economy, such as grasping new and innovative technologies and formats of delivering and processing information.   And the best part is that you will never need to step foot into a classroom, since the entire degree can be complete online.   Link: More detailed explanation: http://sps.cuny.edu/student_resources/online_learning.html

The degree opens the door to careers in social service; management and leadership; marketing and market research; education, criminal justice, health and public or other nonprofit administration. A BA in Psychology allows the student to gain insights into motivation, learning, social behavior and development across the lifespan and learning how to conduct research, design surveys, interpret behavioral situation and communicate effectively. This is an excellent foundation for a career in social service, management and business, marketing and market research, health care and government, as well as go on to graduate study. This degree provides a strong foundation in the four areas that underlie most work in psychology: developmental psych, socio-cultural approaches, learning and cognition and the biological bases of behavior.
  20. Disability Studies is an emerging academic field that explores disability and society from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on social policy, history, law, medicine, philosophy, education and the humanities. The program uses a ‘person-centered’ approach, providing students with a strong foundation in disability theory and history in six foundational courses, followed opportunity for more in-depth study in one of four concentrations. The BA in Disability Studies is targeted to direct support professionals and individuals with disabilities, but is also appropriate for parents, advocates and others wishing to gain new perspectives on disability.
