HOST INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT
SOFT INSTITUTIONS
 Intangible aspects
 Rules that are not
formalized, but exist –
culture, ethics
 When rules fail, informal
institutions substitute them
 MNEs use private means,
such as personal
connections, to reduce
uncertainty
HARD INSTITUTIONS
 Tangible aspects
 Transport and physical
infrastructure
 High accessibility to the host
market and low transport
costs
 MNEs have to operate with
less efficiency, as they have to
build their own infrastructure
AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF CHINESE OFDI: THE ROLE OF THE HOST COUNTRY’S LEVEL OF INFRASTRUCTUREAN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF CHINESE OFDI: THE ROLE OF THE HOST COUNTRY’S LEVEL OF INFRASTRUCTURE
1) Does the level of infrastructure in the host
country deter or attract Chinese OFDI?
2) Is this relationship moderated
by the host country type?

DOES THE LEVEL OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE HOST COUNTRY DETER OR ATTRACT CHINESE OFDI?
Hypothesis 1
CHINESE OFDI
 Low attention to profitability
 Lack of corporate governance mechanisms
 Obligation to achieve the country’s strategic goals
 Ability to operate effectively in the harsh business
environment of emerging markets

 Obtain raw materials
 Improve the host business environment
 Obtain preferential arrangements
 Secure specific investment opportunities
 Create regional cooperation encouraging the competitiveness of
its MNEs
In developing countries, the Chinese government use

CONCLUSION
 Chinese MNEs are attracted by countries that
are on fringe of competitiveness in terms of
infrastructure
 Importance of developing countries’ as
destination of business of Chinese MNEs
 Necessity to consider China’s model as
extraordinary with respect to the conventional
model
 The study offers for the first time the opportunity to examine
the role of host countries hard institutions in the expansion
model of Chinese MNEs
