Appeasement in Action What was appeasement?
This is Europe in 1938 -39
Hitler’s Expansion bus – The road to WW2 Sudetenland Riots The Saar The Rhineland Anschluss Sept 1938 Jan 1935 March 1936 March 1938 Munich Agreement Invasion of Poland Sept 1938 Occupation Czechoslovakia Nazi-Soviet Pact 1st Sept 1939 Aug 1939 March 1939
1935 – Hitler’s first major victory came when the Saar (an area of land taken off Germany by the ToV) voted to return to German control. The Saar! Join with me to make a greater Germany! (otherwise the SA will beat you up!) 90% voted yes!
1936 – Hitler marched his soldiers into the Rhineland (not allowed by ToV!) I hope Britain and France don’t try to stop me as I’m weak. No problem he is simply “marching into his own backyard”.
1938 – In Germany Hitler has been steadily building his army. Britain and France turned a blind eye as they had their own issues to deal with. Hello, I’m Hitler – I’m not evil! I just want to be friends!!! Well the communist USSR will have to attack him before us! Let him have his army.
1938 – Hitler turned his attention to the south. He wanted to unite with Austia (ANSCHLUSS) The German-speaking country of Austria should be part of a ‘greater Germany’!
1938 – In Austria the Prime Minster Schuschnigg was not impressed! Be my friend... No way! Austria is an independent country. You’ll regret this Schuschnigg!
1938 – The Austrian Nazi party begins to cause trouble starting fires and rioting to make the government look bad. Pssst....Cause some trouble for Schuschnigg. Hey....
1938 –Hitler moved his troops near the Austrian border and offer to help out with the problems. My army will help you out and ‘restore order’. I said NO!...hey why are you tanks at the border? Britain. France. Help me out pls... No! Non! No! Hitler is my BFF
1938 –With no help from Britain, France or Italy a frustrated Schuschnigg resigns. That’s it! I quit!
1938 –The ex-chief of police (AND NAZI) Seyss-Inquart takes over and immediately invites Hitler’s troops in to ‘restore order’. Come on in Hitler and help us out, pretty please... (Come on he even looks evil!)
14th March 1938 –The German army entered Austria triumphantly. Hitler immediately had his men round up 80,000 opponents of the union and imprison them.
1938 –Then Hitler held a vote, his soldiers intimidating the Austrian voters. 99.75% of the vote was in favour of Hitler being in charge. Vote our way or you’ll be sorry! 99.75% JA! Get in!!!
1938 –Hitler next turned his attention on Czechoslovakia. The Sudetenland had around 3 million German speakers living in it. The German-speaking area of Sudetenland should be part of a ‘greater Germany’!
1938 –There were many attractive things about the Sudetenland to Hitler. Skoda tank factories Many leading German banks Deposits of coal Strong mountain defences Deposits of Lignite (brown coal)
If Facebook had existed (just for fun)... Hitler (Not Evil) Hmmm sooo wants the Sudetenland! Nazis FTW! 73 Years ago Comment Like Mussolini and Franco likes this. Benes Never, that is part of Czechoslovakia. We wont give in! 73 Years ago Like Hitler (Not Evil) Looks like you having a little trouble there, help? 73 Years ago Like Hitler (Not Evil) has organised Riots Hitler (Not Evil) Mwhahahahahaha! 73 Years ago Like Benes Britain! France! Help me!!! 73 Years ago Like
September1938 –The British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain agreed to meet with Hitler at his mountain home, Berchtesgaden (Eagle’s Nest). Chamberlain Hitler Vs. Come on now...leave Czechoslovakia alone. Never!!!!
September1938 –Chamberlain returns home and tells the British people to prepare for war.
September1938 –The ‘Munich conference’ is arranged and Chamberlain meets Hitler with Mussolini and Daladier. Benes is not invited. Whyyyyy???? I resign! Mwhaha, I can’t believe I’m getting away with this. I think I can trust him.... Chamberlain agrees to let the Nazis have the Sudetenland.
March 1939 –The new Czech President Hatcha could not run his country as Poland took over part of it and then the Slovaks demanded independence. Sure no worries! Errr...Mister Hitler I need your help. My country is falling apart and I need some help. This is working perfectly!
March 1939 –The Nazi tanks rolled into the Czech capital Prague unopposed. It is obvious that Poland is Hitler’s next target. This was the end of Appeasement,
23rd August 1939 –The Nazis hold secret talks with the USSR and then announce the Nazi-Soviet pact. They had agreed to divide Poland between them. At the time people were shocked that these two enemies had made a treaty. This cartoon reflects this shock! Hitler: The scum of the Earth, I believe. Stalin: The Bloody assassin of the workers I presume! This body represents Poland
Hitler’s Expansion bus – Recap Sudetenland Riots The Saar The Rhineland Anschluss Sept 1938 Jan 1935 March 1936 March 1938 Munich Agreement Invasion of Poland Sept 1938 Occupation Czechoslovakia Nazi-Soviet Pact 1st Sept 1939 Aug 1939 March 1939
THE STEPS TO WAR Recap Hitler aimed to create a greater Germany To achieve Anschluss he ordered the Austrian Nazis to riot. After Schuschnigg resigned, Hitler was then invited into the country. Hitler then demanded the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. Benes the President refused and Hitler ordered the Nazi to stir up trouble. Benes went to Britain, France and Italy for help. At the Munich Conference, Chamberlain agreed to give Hitler the Sudetenland. Benes resigned and Hatcha took over, only to invite Hitler into restore order. Hitler set his sights on Poland and GB made a treaty with them to protect them. Hitler signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact with Stalin then invaded Poland.
