A private Java (Maven or Gradle) repository as a service can be setup in the cloud. A private Docker registry as a service can be easily setup in the cloud. But what if you want to build a holistic CI/CD pipeline, and on the cloud of YOUR choice? In this talk Baruch will take you through steps of setting up a universal artifact repository, which can serve for both Java and Docker. You’ll learn how to build a CI/CD pipeline with traceable metadata from the Java source files all the way to Docker images. Amazon, Azure, and Google Cloud (do you have setup that works on these?) will be used as an example although the recipes shown would be applicable to other cloud as well.

Data storage is one of the most crucial parts of any applications, and we use many different tools and tricks to keep it in a good shape. We frequently use both old school relational systems with new approaches commonly known as NoSQL. We write sophisticated queries and use optimization techniques to give our end users the greatest possible experience. So why is persistence very often skipped in the testing efforts? Is it really that complex and painful to setup? During this talk we will have a closer look at Arquillian Persistence Extension together with NoSQLUnit. These tools remove that burden and boilerplate to make you a happy and productive programmer again! Join this session and see for yourself that writing tests for your data storage logic is as easy as writing normal unit tests!

Puppet installations are usually quite robust and require low maintenance. The initial setup is not quite trivial, however. The Puppet master will also become quite a critical system once it is put to work in earnest. As a result, it can become a somewhat daunting task to perform changes on the master, or conduct more intrusive debugging. This presentation shows how test instances of both the master and agent can be launched with little effort, and how Puppet can be run from source.

As part of the 2014 USENIX Release Engineering Summit West, I presented a talk about packaging software and what's wrong with current trends. Here's the abstract: Reliably distributing software is a notoriously difficult problem, and almost every operating system and programming language vendor has tried to solve it. This has led to a herd of packaging systems, almost none of which are cross-compatible; some manage system-level software, while others focus on extending their own language (often by trampling on system-level software). And like all competing standards, every packaging system comes with its own sharp corners, dull edges, and hidden idiosyncrasies to deal with along the path to packaging happiness. In an attempt to answer the question "How do I install this software and ensure that its dependencies are fulfilled?", some novel solutions have begun to see popular adoption. But a lot of these newer tools and techniques tread the same ground as their predecessors while overlooking the lessons that were learned along the way. I'll talk about the state of native packaging systems on some popular platforms (Debian/Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS/Fedora, and Mac OS X), packaging systems for popular languages (Ruby, Python, Perl, and Node) and the ways that developers are attempting to work around the limitations of these systems. I'll review the reasons that tools like curlbash, FPM, and omnibus packages have become popular by sharing lessons I've learned while working through these systems. While this will be an amusing presentation, I'll show how native packages can address the concerns that have pushed Release Engineers and Developers away. I will also talk about what native packaging systems can learn from the next generation of packaging tools. The original abstract is available here: https://www.usenix.org/conference/ures14west/summit-program/presentation/mckern

Designing the code of a large application in production and scaling up to thousands of users while doing it all in Node.js is a challenge that no developer should face alone. I will discuss how we have developed a highly decoupled, plugin-based architecture and a decentralized infrastructure for Cloud9 IDE, along with the technologies we've developed and the difficulties we faced in order to build the largest Node.js application that exists in production.

In this talk from Ian Amit, he will try to address things from a more tactical (read: practical) perspective for application development. What 'we' see, or want, from a security practitioner perspective is nice, but enabling it from an application view isn't trivial. He'll cover the aspects that the attendees can gain from having applications designed and implemented in certain manners, while of course not changing the way things are being practiced these days (too much). He will also show how logging (yes… plain old boring logging) can go a long way, and how applications that are a bit more self conscience to their state can be utilised to detect attacks before they actually happen.

OKRs are a goal-setting, strategy execution tool that involves setting ambitious goals that lead to measurable results. The thing is, over the years, OKRs have gotten too complicated - they need to be put on a diet - and that’s where Lean OKRs step in. They are hyper-focused on one single OKR to rule all others. Often, OKRs are not set up for success and thus tossed aside. There are four (and a half) common reasons why your OKRs aren’t working. Among them, the importance of finding a rhythm for making OKRs part of your way of working, leading teams with trust, and getting the foundation in place so teams aren’t running before they learn how to walk.

Irritated with having to provide estimates to your management that you know are probably going to be wrong? We investigated that there's a BETTER WAY. Can we make the unpredictable world of product development a little more predictable?

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
